Life

Christel Poll was born in Bielefeld in 1914 as the youngest of seven children. Her father was a teacher and vice principal . After graduating from high school, Poll studied from 1934 to 1935 at the Werkkunstschule Bielefeld with Karl Muggly and from 1935 to 1938 at the Kunsthochschule Berlin with Georg Schrimpf and Bernhard Hasler . In 1938 she passed the state examination for teaching in the arts. From 1935 to 1945 she ran a joint studio with her brother Hermann Poll on Trabener Strasse in Berlin-Grunewald . From 1938 she made numerous trips to Italy with regular study visits to Palinuro , Ponza and onIschia . There Christel Poll met the painters Eduard Bargheer , Werner Gilles , Max Peiffer Watenphul and Berthold Müller-Oerlinghausen . In 1947, Poll received a teaching position at the Paderborn University of Education. From 1949 she ran a studio in Bielefeld's Uhlandstrasse. In 1952 she became a member of the artist group Junge Westen . In 1957 she received a professorship for fine arts at the Pedagogical Academy in Paderborn. 1972 Poll became a member of the West German Artists Association . Based on the painting of her teacher Georg Schrimpf , Christel Poll began her artistic work in the 1930s with naturalistic drawings, portrait studies and still lifes. Under the impression of her first trip to Italy, the imitation of nature faded into the background in favor of the picturesque. Even before the outbreak of the Second World War, her works showed the intense engagement with the international avant-garde. In particular, Emil Nolde's lyrical landscapes , Paul Cézanne's structuring painting style and Henri Matisse's art, which aimed at color effects , had a great influence on her artistic development. In the early 1950s, Poll laid out her strongly colored paintings in two-dimensional compositions. In her work, she used Christian and mythological iconography, but also painted everyday scenes from the world of southern Italy, which is characterized by religiosity and work. Her expressive painting of this time showed parallels to the work of Werner Gilles , who had regularly spent summers on Ischia since 1936. In the 1960s, the monochrome areas of color dissolved in favor of a neo-impressionist late style, and the landscape became the dominant theme of her painting. In short, impasto brushstrokes, Poll laid complex carpets of color over her canvases, which only come together from a distance to form a whole.

Since the 1950s, Christel Poll has also worked as a glass and mosaic artist with her own workshop. Her work is still accessible to the public in numerous churches, schools and hospitals, mainly in East Westphalia. While her mosaic works mostly deal with Christian themes, her stained glass is abstract and is characterized by bold hues.
