Christian Carius (2016)

Christian Carius (born September 22, 1976 in Mühlhausen / Thuringia ) is a lobbyist and former German politician ( CDU ). From October 14, 2014 to October 31, 2018, he was President of the Thuringian State Parliament, of which he was a member from 1999 to 2019.

Before that, he was Minister for Construction, Regional Development and Transport of the Free State of Thuringia from 2009 to 2014 .

education

After graduating from high school in 1995 at the Pforta State School and the subsequent community service , Carius studied law at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena from 1996 to 2001 (without a degree). From 2001 to 2007 he studied law, politics and history at the FernUniversität Hagen . He completed this degree as a political scientist ( MA ).

Political career

In 1995 he joined the CDU and the RCDS . In 1999 he became deputy RCDS regional chairman (until 2001) and district chairman of the Junge Union in the Sömmerda district . In the 1999 state elections , he was elected to the Thuringian state parliament and at that time was its youngest member. He was also a member of the city council in Sömmerda from 1999 to 2001 .

Carius had been a member of the CDU parliamentary group executive since his election to the state parliament and was also a member of the CDU state executive for the first time from 2000 to 2002. In 2003 he became deputy CDU district chairman in Sömmerda. Since 2004 he has been a member of the district council there; from 2004 to 2009 also 2nd alderman of the district administrator. In addition, Carius has been a member of the CDU state executive again since 2004 and was deputy CDU parliamentary group chairman in the Thuringian state parliament from 2006 to 2009. After the formation of a coalition government of CDU and SPD following the state elections in Thuringia in 2009 , Carius was appointed Minister of Construction in the Lieberknecht cabinet.

On October 14, 2014, he was elected President of the Landtag at the constituent session of the 6th Thuringian Landtag as the successor to Birgit Diezel , who did not make it into the Landtag, and left the State Government. On September 28, 2018, he announced that he would resign from office for personal reasons at the end of October of that year and that he would not run for the state parliament again. In November 2018 it was announced that Carius will be Head of Corporate Development and Governmental Affairs at the automotive supplier Mubea from January 1, 2019 . He resigned his state parliament mandate on January 5, 2019.

Carius has always entered the Thuringian state parliament as a directly elected member of the Sömmerda II constituency .

Other activities

After an information military exercise and a corresponding application to the Bundeswehr , the former conscientious objector was appointed lieutenant colonel of the reserve in 2017 .

Since January 1, 2019, Carius has been responsible for corporate development and cooperation with government and authorities at the automotive supplier Mubea.
