Christian David Gebauer (born October 15, 1777 in Neusalz an der Oder , Lower Silesia , † September 15, 1831 in Aarhus ) was a Danish battle, animal and genre painter and graphic artist.

Life

Christian David Gebauer was the son of Johann Christian Gebauer and Maria Elisabeth, geb. Rupprecht. He was born in 1777 in Neusalz an der Oder, today's Nowa Sól, where his father worked as a preacher for the Moravian Brethren . He and his parents later came to Barby and then to the settlement of the Moravian Brethren of Christiansfeld in North Schleswig , where he spent his childhood and became a Danish citizen.

From 1800 he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen with Christian August Lorentzen , but had to give up his studies in 1801 due to a hearing loss that had existed since childhood. His motifs at this time were mainly landscapes and the representation of animals. His exhibited student works, some ink drawings with humorous content, some large paintings, caught Nicolai Abildgaard's attention and earned him the favor of Count Christian Ditlev Reventlow . He exhibited for the first time at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in 1806 and exhibited regularly throughout his life.

With the help of various scholarships he was able to undertake several study trips, so he was in Dresden in 1813/1814, where he devoted himself to battle painting, and from 1826 to 1827 in Munich and Vienna. In 1815 he became a member of the art academy, one of his students was a. a. Jørgen Sonne . From 1828 he lived in Aarhus, where he established himself as a drawing teacher. Gebauer's works were strongly influenced in their statements by gallery studies by Dutch and Flemish masters.

Christian David Gebauer was married to Mariane Hoeg (1780–1827) from 1807. Gebauer died in Aarhus in 1831 shortly before his 54th birthday. He was buried on Søndre Kirkegård, the tombstone is now in Rådhusparken. The city of Aarhus named Gebauersgade after the artist in 1899 .
