Christian Krattenthaler

Christian Friedrich Krattenthaler (born October 8, 1958 in Vienna ) is an Austrian mathematician . He is professor of discrete mathematics with a focus on combinatorics and dean of the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna .

After receiving his PhD sub auspiciis Praesidentis rei publicae at the University of Vienna in 1983 with Johann Cigler with the dissertation Lagrange formula and inverse relations , he worked at various universities, including the University of California, San Diego , the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley , and the Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg and the Université Claude Bernard in Lyon before he was appointed professor at his home university.

His specialty are problems of counting combinatorics , such as those that occur in algebra , algebraic geometry or number theory , computer science or statistical physics .

In 1990 he won the Austrian Mathematical Society's advancement award . In 2005 he became a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In 2007 he received the Wittgenstein Prize of the FWF . He has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2011 . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .

Krattenthaler is also a trained concert pianist , but had to forego a relevant career because of a chronic inflammation of the hand.
