Christian Maurer (theologian)

Christian Maurer (born April 30, 1913 in Arosa ; † April 15, 1992 in Bern ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman and university professor .

Life

Christian Maurer was the son of the printer Louis Gustav Maurer and his wife Anna Katharina (née Koller).

He enrolled at the University of Zurich in 1933 and began studying theology, among others with Emil Brunner . He continued his studies at the University of Berlin and the University of Basel , here with Karl Barth among others ; In 1937 he finished his studies.

From 1937 to 1951 he was pastor in Beggingen ; During this time his doctorate he with a dissertation on Pauline law teaching in 1941 to Dr. theol. and in 1947 became a private lecturer at the University of Zurich.

From 1951 to 1954 he was a pastor in Fehraltorf and from 1954 he taught as a professor at the Church University of Bethel and worked at the Bodelschwingh'schen Anstalten in Bielefeld . From 1966 to 1978 he was a full professor at the University of Bern .

Christian Maurer was married to the kindergarten teacher Susanna Elisabeth, daughter of Pastor Albert Schäfer.

Spiritual and literary work

Christian Maurer, as a pastor in Beggingen in the " Klettgauer Kränzchen", dealt critically with National Socialism with his neighboring pastors Arthur Rich , Hans Wildberger (1910–1986) and Werner Bieder . He also advocated making academic theology useful in the pastoral, diaconal and educational work of the church. In 1943 he wrote a commentary on Galatians .
