Records

1998

As early as 1998, Redl set an Austrian record in time diving at the Freediving World Championships in Sardinia with 4:50 minutes .

2003

Christian Redl set the first world record in February 2003 at Weissensee in Carinthia , where he covered a 90 meter long distance (in 90 seconds) under a closed ice sheet with the help of fins. With this record he improved the existing record of the Italian Nicola Brischigiaro by 5 meters. On the same day, he set another world record in which he dived 150 meters on a scooter under a closed sheet of ice. With this record he improved the record held by Nicola Brischigiaro by 50 meters.

2006

In September 2006 he set a world record for distance diving in a cave. In this record, he covered a distance of 101 meters in a cave in Mexico. While freediving in a cave, the diver does not have the opportunity to surface. This record was beaten in November 2010 by Carlos Coste with 150 meters by 49 meters.

2007

In September 2007, Redl set another record in a cave in Mexico. This record was a constant weight deep dive record where he dived to a depth of 60 meters. Because half of the cave leads downwards at a 30-degree angle, he had to cover a distance of 70 meters to reach the maximum depth on this record.

2008

In November 2008, Redl again set a world record for deep diving in a cenote on the Mexican peninsula of Yucatán , this time in the variable weight discipline. With this record, Redl dived into the deepest known cave to date and had to cover a distance of 120 meters to get to the maximum depth of 71 meters (2:20 minutes). He achieved this by letting himself be pulled down on inclined ropes with the help of a weight.

2009

In March 2009 Redl improved his personal best from 90 meters in distance diving under ice to 93 meters and thus set another world record. Redl originally wanted to dive 100 meters with this record, the bad weather conditions prevented this.

2010

In February 2010, Redl was the first person to cover a distance of 100 meters (in 1:12 minutes) under a closed ice sheet with the help of fins . This record was surpassed in January 2011 by Nik Linder . The new record is 108 m.

2011

In February 2011 Redl started another world record attempt at Weissensee in Carinthia in the discipline of variable weight under ice. He dived with the help of a weight to a depth of 61 meters (in 1:51 minutes) and emerged again under his own power. This was his 8th world record. To date (2011), this dive is also the deepest free dive under ice.

2012

In October 2012, Redl set a new world record with the "highest" free dive at 5160 m in the highest of the six Gokyo lakes in Nepal / Himalaya . Redl manages to hold his breath for over 2 minutes (STA). The special challenge with this record lies in the altitude of the water level of the lake.

Current world records

Christian Redl is currently the world record holder in the following (not officially recognized) disciplines:

  • Deep diving with various aids in a cave: 71 m (2008)
  • Deepest apnea dive under ice with variable weight: 61 m (2010)
  • Highest apnea dive (static): 2 minutes at 5160 m (2012) (According to orf.at over 3 minutes in the sixth Goyko lake.)

Commitment to freediving

Courses

Christian Redl is a certified apnea diving instructor of the associations CMAS and PADI and ISE and regularly holds apnea courses in cooperation with local diving centers and clubs in Germany, Austria and Egypt. In the courses Christian Redl wants to teach the students theoretical as well as practical approaches to free diving such as breathing techniques, relaxation techniques, rescue techniques, distance and deep diving. The course participants are informed about the possible risks of freediving. Thanks to his initiative, PADI has now also included the apnea area in its training and offers the PADI Freediver and PADI Advanced Freediver as certification . Since 2013 he has also been running special seminars for technical divers for the international technical diving association InnerSpace Explorers.

Ice hockey under ice

Christian Redl is also the initiator of the World Ice Hockey Championship under ice, which took place for the first time on February 25, 2007 at Weissensee in Carinthia and in which 8 nations (Austria, Germany, Finland, Holland, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland) took part . In ice hockey under ice, the goals are fastened upside down under the ice and a playing field measuring 8 × 6 meters is marked. Two players per team play against each other, equipped with a diving suit , mask , fins and an ice hockey stick. The aim of the game is to shoot a styrofoam puck into the opponent's goal as often as possible. To breathe, holes are cut in the ice sheet outside the playing field. The duration of a third is 10 minutes.

From February 15 to 16, 2013, the ice hockey world championship took place for the second time. The venue was again the Weissensee in Carinthia.

TV appearances

Some of Redl's records were accompanied by the TV show Galileo ( Pro7 ), he was also invited to the late-night show TV-Total (Pro7) by Stefan Raab and several times to the ZDF program Johannes B. Kerner . Christian also worked as a stuntman for underwater recordings in television programs such as Medicopter 117 or the Coast Guard .

Awards

On October 10, 2014, Christian Redl received the "X-Award" for his numerous and extraordinary records. This was the first year that Franz Müllner launched it especially for Austrian extreme athletes.
