Christiane Wartenberg (artist)

Christiane Wartenberg (* 1948 in Magdeburg ) is a German visual artist specializing in sculpture , installation , architectural art , graphics and drawing .

Life

Wartenberg spent five years of her childhood in a village in Lusatia . She attended school in Magdeburg and then did an apprenticeship as a commercial applicant . Between 1969 and 1974 she studied sculpture at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art and graduated with a diploma.

After commissioned work in East Berlin's new building districts and the surrounding area, Wartenberg received a work grant from the cultural fund of the new federal states after the fall of the Wall in 1992 . She became self-employed and initially ran a studio in a former stable in Berlin-Karow . Then she worked in Schönow , a district of Bernau , in a self-constructed residential and work building. Since 1993 she has lived and worked on a large farm in the Ortwig district of Letschin im Oderbruch. In 1994 and 1998 she was visiting professor at the Weißensee University.

  • 1978: Märkischer Brunnen , Berlin-Friedrichsfelde
    opposite the bear shop window of the Berlin Zoo on Heinrich-Dathe-Platz. Eight abstract fountain steles made of terracotta are separated asymmetrically in the middle by a larger basin with brick fountain steles. On the sides of the large, more gate-like steles, there are women's and animal masks as gargoyles . All water connections have been disconnected since around 1992, but the sculptures are well preserved. First, the basins were filled with sand and planted. In 2011, the employees of the Lichtenberg district administration completely exposed the fountain elements, which now form a kind of art gallery.

    A ceramic figure, 1.50 meters high, was set up in Karower Strasse, between the archive and the medical college.
  • 1988: Hofzeichen , Berlin-Marzahn
    At the entrance to the courtyard on Bernburger Strasse (height numbers 15/17) there is a 1.80 m high terracotta stele on a 70 centimeter wide base. It consists of a symbolic tower-like architecture, which is closed by an arched wreath. Individual wedges and triangles emerge from the stele.

  • 2002/2003: Hahn als Rufer , Letschin .
    The Letschin municipality had advertised a realization competition for the design of a sculpture for a small roundabout in the village with reference to the district's coat of arms. The artist, who lives here, won first prize with the 3.20 meter high bronze work. On a giant stool that is to recall the basic construction of half-timbered buildings, sits a rooster that the actual center with the elongated Anger turns. A publication in the Märkische Oderzeitung in 2012 shows that the plastic was damaged by a collision with a vehicle and that a restoration was negotiated. In May 2013 the rooster, restored in a Berlin workshop, was put back on its frame.

Wartenberg founded the Loose Art publishing house in 2007 . The books that appear here contain the results of the annual art symposia that she organizes on her homestead. She works closely with other artists from her federal state on the editions.

Award

  • In 2019 Wartenberg was awarded the Brandenburg Art Prize 2019 for life's work
  • In 2011 Christiane Wartenberg received for her long-term project “Assaults.
