life and work

After Christoph Knoll, who was born in Bunzlau in 1563 as the son of a shoemaker , had received his training at schools in Bunzlau and Görlitz , he enrolled at the University of Frankfurt an der Oder in 1583 and at the University of Wittenberg the following year . During this time he already dealt with mathematics and astronomy . In 1584 or 1586 he became a signatory in Sprottau. From 1591 he worked there as a deacon . His son became a pastor in Wittgendorf .

During the plague in 1599 Knoll wrote his spiritual death song Herzlich does me long for a happy ending . Knoll's song was still popular during his lifetime. In Songbook Harmoniae sacrae (Gorlitz 1613), the text of the melody first appeared Hans Leo Hassler's love song My G'müt me verwirret kontrafaziert . The same melody was later added by Johann Crüger to the text O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden by Paul Gerhardt .
