Christ Church

The Christ Church , completed in 1899, is the first and only Evangelical Lutheran church in Berchtesgaden .

history

In the 16th century, the teachings of Martin Luther found a growing following in the prince-provostie of Berchtesgaden , whose fate was closely linked to events in the prince-archbishopric of Salzburg . Jacob Strauss appeared as a Protestant preacher in Berchtesgaden as early as 1521 , accompanied by Christoph Söll, a “journeyman priest” and later Strasbourg preacher who had belonged to the Berchtesgaden Abbey. But in the years 1732/33, in the course of the Counter Reformation, more than half of all Protestants were forced to emigrate, and thus 1,100 out of around 9,000 inhabitants within the prince-provostie of Berchtesgaden. Their property was confiscated and sold by the monastery, the proceeds flowing into a so-called emigrant fund . This was followed by the re-missioning of the Protestants who remained in the region.

It was not until the edicts of King Maximilian I Joseph of 1808 and 1809 and the associated founding of an Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria that Protestantism could be revived in Berchtesgaden and a church of its own could be built 90 years later. In the meantime, the Berchtesgaden Protestants were part of the exposed vicariate that had existed since 1878 or of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Bad Reichenhall founded in 1886 with its Evangelical City Church built in 1881 , and on site the dormitory in the Royal Palace as well as the former rent office building served them as prayer rooms . However, after more and more Protestant tourists had visited Berchtesgaden and established second homes there, the Christ Church at the end of Ludwig-Ganghofer-Strasse was built between 1897 and 1899 and finally a parish was founded in 1920.

Furnishing

The church building was built by August Thiersch in neo-Gothic style from calf stone marble and completed in 1899. For the inauguration, the church received an altar Bible from the last German Empress, Auguste Viktoria . The picture next to the pulpit is by Ludwig Thiersch . In 1933 a memorial plaque was placed in the right aisle in memory of the fellow believers who were expelled from Berchtesgadener Land 200 years ago. In 1965/66 the neo-Gothic interior was largely removed, the altar moved forward and its structure removed. All walls were now painted in plain white, the baptismal font was placed in front of the steps to the choir and a large bronze cross with a body by the Berchtesgaden sculptor Hans Richter was placed behind the altar. Instead of the previously colored windows, there are now lead-framed panes of white, opalescent glass in the side aisles based on designs by the Graefelfingen artist Rudolf Büder.

Responsible parish

In addition to its Christ Church as the main church in Berchtesgaden , the Evangelical Lutheran Church Community of Berchtesgaden is also responsible for the Evangelical Lutheran church buildings in Bischofswiesen , Ramsau near Berchtesgaden and Schönau am Königssee . The parish is part of the Traunstein deanery within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria . In view of the small percentage of its community members within the mentioned communities of the Berchtesgadener Land district , it is in the minority situation of a diaspora .
