Chromehounds is an action game distributed by Sega . It was released for the Xbox 360 in 2006 .

Game mechanics

campaign

In Chromehounds, the player controls newly developed and very powerful war machines, so-called HOUNDs (German "dogs"). These HOUNDs can be composed of different parts and thus have different strengths and weaknesses.

The game starts shortly before the outbreak of the so-called war of neroism between the three fictional nations Democratic Republic of Tarakia , Republic of Morskoj and the Kingdom of Sal Kar . The player takes on the role of a nameless mercenary who becomes a member of Rafzakael , a secret society founded by weapon developers from all over the world. Rafazakael enjoys very good connections to various countries and organizations, which means that they have access to a wide variety of weapons. In the course of the story mode, the mercenary learns how to deal with different HOUND role types (RT) and takes orders from constantly changing leaders or clients.

Depending on the equipment, armament and armor, HOUNDs are divided into different role types. A distinction is made between the soldier , the sniper , the defender , the scout , the gunner , and the commander role type . In story mode, the player can complete seven missions for each role type. Before the mission begins, what is known as a briefing appears on the screen , in which the mission objective and the team members involved are described. In addition, the player can choose whether to go to the mission with a loan HOUND or whether he wants to use his own HOUND. Your own HOUND can be assembled from various parts in the workshop , but these are not available from the start, but are only activated gradually when the mission is successfully completed. A total of 176 HOUND parts and 17 color samples can be unlocked. After a completed mission, the player's performance is assessed in the so-called debriefing. The player receives points for the time required, the range of fire, the number of enemies destroyed and secondary objectives. Which reached, depending on score then rank displayed the highest rank to be obtained within a mission is the rank S .

Role type description
Soldier role type Front line specialist who plays an important role in close combat . Basically, he is responsible for destroying enemy bases and headquarters . In doing so, he draws on information obtained from scouts. Soldier HOUNDs are usually quite fast and armed with melee weapons. Most of these HOUNDs have a two-legged drive, which means they can be used on many terrains.
Sniper role type They mostly operate in the background and support their allied troops by ambushing long distances. The main task of a sniper is to cover his allies and to carry out preventive attacks against enemy troops. Sniper HOUNDs are very agile and mobile, but their poor armor means they are less protected from enemy attacks. You have different powerful sniper weapons .
Defender role type The Defender-RT is a tank specialist who protects and defends in particular allied troops and the headquarters. Defender HOUNDs are heavily armored and armed with heavy weapons such as rocket launchers .
Scout role type Scout RT are responsible for reconnaissance missions. Your task is not in combat, but in scouting the area, gathering information and securing so-called Combas towers in order to expand the communication range of the allied troops and the commander. Scout HOUNDs are always only lightly armed, but equipped with other auxiliary parts, such as night vision devices or mine detectors, and usually move forward with a wheel or air cushion drive.
Gunner role type The Gunner-RT is an artillery expert and specializes in shooting at the enemy from a long distance. Gunner HOUNDs are extremely heavily armed and have enormous firepower.
Commander role type The commander RT is responsible for and directing missions. They are equipped with a so-called NB generator (NB = network area), through which allied troop members and enemies are displayed on the radar . Commanders have the task of coordinating their troops and mission objectives and giving orders. They rarely intervene actively in the war, which is why their HOUNDs are only lightly armed.

War of neroism

The War of Neroism was an online campaign in which players could join troops fighting for one of the warring nations, the Democratic Republic of Tarakia , the Republic of Morskoj and the Kingdom of Sal Kar, against troops from the other two nations. For every victory the troops received financial rewards. The war continued until the two enemy nations were conquered. Should no nation have won after two months of playing, the campaign was reset to the state it was in before the war broke out. Since the online server was closed, the war of neroism is no longer playable.

Server closure

On January 6, 2010, Sega took all Chromehounds servers offline . Since then, Chromehounds can only be played offline. The Xbox Live menu can still be selected, but an active connection to Xbox Live is no longer established. Since the server was closed, the online successes of Chromehounds can no longer be unlocked.
