Chuniophoenix is a genus of palm that is native to Southeast Asia. The genus is named after the Chinese botanist Woon Young Chun (1890-1971), director of the Botanical Institute of the Sun Yatsen University in Canton.

features

The representatives are small, multi-stemmed palms. They are unarmed, blooming several times and hermaphroditic (more rarely polygamo-diocese). The trunk is graceful with medium strength, upright and curled with leaf scars.

The chromosome number is 2n = 36.

leaves

The leaves are fan-shaped and induplicate (v-shaped) folded. The leaf sheath is initially Roehrig, later torn open opposite the petiole. The petiole is well developed and has smooth margins. A hastula is missing. The leaf blade is irregularly divided almost to the base into one to several folded segments.

Inflorescences

The inflorescence stands between the leaves, it is spike-shaped or branched up to two times. The peduncle is well developed. The cover sheet is short, persistent, roehrig and two-keeled. There are several bracts on the peduncle. These are persistent, tubular, closely-separated and distant. The inflorescence axis, if any, is shorter to much longer than the inflorescence stalk. Their bracts resemble those on the peduncle. The flower-bearing axes (rachillae) are upright to protruding and carry spirally arranged, perennial, tubular bracts, each with a group of flowers.

blossoms

The flowers are solitary or in compressed coils of up to seven flowers. The calyx is tubular, slightly two- to three-lobed. The crown has a long, stem-shaped base and three triangular valvate, later bent back, fleshy tips. There are six stamens with long, fleshy filaments and oval to elongated anthers . The ovary is stalked something elongated with basal standing Septal Nektarien and dreifächrig. The stylus has three furrows, is long and in three parts at the tip. The ovules are anatropic and attach to the inner compartment wall at the base.

Fruits and seeds

The fruit is small, round and lonely. It is green when immature and becomes scarlet when it is ripe. At the top there are scar remains . The exocarp is smooth, the mesocarp fleshy, and the endocarp thin. The seed is irregularly spherical, the endosperm is furrowed or homogeneous.

Distribution and locations

The genus is native to southern China and northern Vietnam, as well as on the island of Hainan. It grows in the understory of the woods.

Systematics

The genus Chuniophoenix Burret is placed within the family Arecaceae in the subfamily Coryphoideae , Tribe Chuniophoeniceae . The genus is monophyletic . Their exact position within the tribe is still unclear.
