Cinzio Violante

Cinzio Violante (born May 16, 1921 in Andria , † March 27, 2001 in Pisa ) was an Italian medieval historian .

Cinzio Violante was already very interested in medieval history at school. In 1941 he was drafted as a soldier and spent the years 1943 to 1945 as a prisoner of war in German camps. He then spent some time in the Catania Military Hospital and graduated from the University of Catania .

In 1948 he received a scholarship at the Istituto Croce in Naples . In addition to the writings of Benedetto Croce , he was strongly influenced by the work of the French magazine Annales . In 1949 he went to the University of Pisa , where he studied primarily with Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli and Ettore Passerin d'Entrèves .

In 1952 he received his doctorate in 1956 at the Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medio Evo in Rome . After studying the history of religion , he was appointed to the Catholic University of Milan . In 1956 he moved to the University of Pisa and dealt more closely with social and economic history , but at the same time emphasized the integration of the history of religion into these subjects in order to find an adequate understanding of medieval society.

Violante was President of the Società storica pisana , the historical society of Pisa, member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei , Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy since 1977 and member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres since 1992 .
