The Cité internationale de la gastronomie et du vin ( CIGV ) ( German  International Place of Gastronomy and Wine ) is a training and presentation center in Dijon , which is dedicated to the art of cooking and in particular to gastronomy and wine . The site of a former hospital, which dates back to a medieval hospice and was classified as a monument historique in 2007, is close to Dijon Central Station across the track.

The planned opening date had to be postponed several times and is now specified as April 2022 instead of the original 2019.

Facility

In 2012 there was a call for proposals as to which city in France could serve as a representative of the cultural heritage of French food culture. As a result, five cities applied for the title of Cité de la gastronomie . In addition to Dijon, these were Beaune , together with the neighboring cities of Chevilly-Larue and Rungis , Lyon , Tours and Versailles , with the latter waiving any further participation before the final decision.

Dijon stands out in comparison with its University of Burgundy , which was founded in 1971 and has its own UNESCO chair for Wine and Culture , which offers an integrated course in oenology with its own winery . The Cité internationale de la gastronomie et du vin (CIGV) is also the starting point of the 60 km route des Grands Crus through the Côte d'Or , Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune .

Planning and construction

A committee (orientation council) was set up, made up of two dozen people from business, the wine industry, journalism and politics, to define the direction of a center for education and external representation of French food culture. The head of the UNESCO chair, Jocelyne Pérard , and the star chef and culinary director of the CIGV, Eric Pras, were also integrated . In addition to a general presentation (permanent exhibition), it was planned from the start to offer themed changing exhibitions and to address a broad public, including international tourism.

The schedule for the construction of this new cultural center was tight: after the city council of Dijon, under the leadership of its mayor François Rebsamen, appointed the project developer and property developer Eiffage to plan, build and finance the CIGV in December 2014 , the last departments left of the hospital in April 2015. In January 2016, the city of Dijon bought it.

Construction work could not begin until June 2019 after the last lawsuits before the appellate court in Lyon had been dismissed in January. The financing of 3 million euros provided by the Département Côte-d'Or for the project could thus be used by the city council. On the construction side, the architects Anthony Béchu (* 1950) and Alain-Charles Perrot (* 1945) oversee the project, who have also carried out other projects together and founded their own company for this purpose.

The creation of the CIGV consists of the renovation and integration of the old structure of the hospital complex and the construction of distinctive and functional show, work and residential buildings. In total, the site covers an area of 6.5 hectares , on which a usable area of 22,000 m² is to be created. The total costs are estimated at 200 to 250 million euros, of which the public body of the CIGV itself will cost 30 million euros.

Facilities

The Cité de la Gastronomie is designed so that it can be visited all year round. The central facilities of the CIGV will be spread over the entire site:

  • A shopping mile with around 15 shops, including two restaurants, on 4500 m² with everything to do with gastronomy, wine and table culture invites you to stroll. In the so-called “Cave de la Cité”, 2500 to 3000 different regional wines should be consumed by the glass thanks to automated self-service dispensing.
  • the Chapelle des Climats cultural center in the former hospital chapel
  • a 70 m² tasting area of the École des Vins des Bureau interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne
  • a culture, conference and training center with exhibition rooms
  • a pavilion that highlights architecture as a cultural heritage
  • a 4-star Hilton hotel with 125 rooms
  • “Ciné-Duc”, a multiplex cinema with 9 halls, and “Supernova”, a arthouse cinema with 4 halls
  • a start-up center with 1500 m², including the Vitagora competence center, which has been state-approved in the field of taste-nutrition-health with its partners from the agricultural and nutrition sector for Burgundy, Franche-Comté and Île-de-France since July 2005 .
  • the École Ferrandi, a private language school

In addition, a new urban district with new living space of 600 residential units is being created on the site.
