action

Danny Kenny, his brother Eddie, and Peggy Nash have been friends since childhood. Growing up in the poor neighborhood of the East Side of New York City , they have only one wish: to rise from their misery. Danny works as a truck driver. When his musical brother Eddie wants to go to music school, Danny earns the money for school with boxing matches. Peggy, on the other hand, wants to become a star as a dancer. She is on her way to fame with her dance partner Murray Burns. But her affection for her childhood friend Danny is stronger than the will to own stardom. When Danny is successful as a boxing fighter, she returns to him and initially gives up her dance career. But a tempting engagement lets them return to the stage. However, this pushes Danny's ambition as a boxer. With championships he wants to win back Peggy. In the decisive championship fight he is seriously injured and blinded with dirty tricks. Peggy hears the fight on the radio and wants to return to him. However, she is turned down by Danny's manager Scotty MacPherson. When Eddie can finally present his composition at Carnegie Hall , Peggy is among the guests while Danny listens to the radio broadcast. In order to get back among people, he now works as a newspaper seller. Eddie dedicates the composition to his blind brother. Peggy returns to Danny after the concert, touched.

background

Director Anatole Litvak injured his eye during filming. Jean Negulesco took over directing for a short time.

The piece of music that Eddie Kenny is allowed to perform in Carnegie Hall has many similarities to George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue - a musical homage to the big city of New York, just as this film wants to be, of different people on their way up and shows in the spotlight: Danny, who tries the honest way as a professional boxer and fails because of dirty machinations; Peggy, who is aiming for a career in show business through dance; Googie, who wants to fight his way up as a criminal despite several previous convictions and dies in the process, and finally Eddie, who finds his way to public recognition in (serious) music.

Reviews

"A soulful, human, psychologically and socially-critically credible film drama which, in addition to strong acting performances, offers an atmospherically dense depiction of city life."
