Clare McAndrew

Clare McAndrew is an Irish cultural economist who specializes in art , antiques and collectibles . She is the founder of the research and consultancy firm Art Economics , author of two books and numerous macroeconomic reports on the global art market . She has been a visiting lecturer at Trinity College Dublin , Christie's Education and Sotheby's Institute . She also holds lectures at the University of Zurich .

Life

Clare McAndrew was born in Ireland and grew up in Australia as the daughter of a psychiatrist and a doctor . She did her PhD in Ireland and then worked in the USA for three years . In 2005 she returned to Europe . Today she lives in Dublin with her husband and children .

education

Clare McAndrew graduated from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, with a PhD in Economics in 2001 , where she lectured for four years. During her doctorate , she mainly dealt with the international trade in fine arts . In her dissertation , she examined how physical, regulatory and cultural distances between countries affect art transactions. After completing her doctorate , she conducted various research in the areas of cultural policy , artist careers and the risks of art investments.

Professional career

From 2002 to 2005, Clare McAndrew worked as chief economist at the American company Kusin & Company. The investment banking boutique founded by David Kusin deals with static analysis of the art market. In 2005, Clare McAndrew founded her own company, Art Economics , a research and advisory firm that focuses exclusively on the art market. She works with private consultants and academics from all over the world to carry out tailor-made research and analysis of the visual and decorative arts market for private and institutional clients . The company's current clients include large international art fairs such as Art Basel , auction houses , companies such as UBS, and national and transnational public institutions such as ministries of art .

Reports and Articles

Along with her colleague Professor Rex Thompson ( Southern Methodist University ), Clare McAndrew has published a number of academic papers on investment risk in the art market in journals such as the Journal of Banking and Finance , Journal of Applied Econometrics and others. From 2005 to 2015, Clare McAndrew prepared an annual macroeconomic report on the global art market for The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) foundation . Since 2016 she has been producing this annual study on the global art market for Art Basel and UBS. The Art Market Report is one of the most important reports in the industry and covers all the major trends in the global art and antiques market.

Books

Clare McAndrew is the author of two books so far. Her first book, The Art Economy , was published by The Liffey Press in 2007. It deals with the evolution of the global art market and is a comprehensive guide to the art market. Aspects such as investment return and risk as well as the role of government in regulating the art market are covered. Her second book Fine Art and High Finance was published by Wiley Press in 2010. The book deals with financial issues faced by art investors. Topics such as art trading on the black market or investing in art funds are among the core topics.
