from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clemens August Theodor Josef von Nagel zur Loburg und Keuschenburg (born April 16, 1748 in Bonn , † February 12, 1828 in Münster ) was a major general of the Prince Diocese of Münster .

Life

origin

Friedrich, the brother of Clemens August, who also had to become a soldier as a child, died in 1787

His father was Josef Marsil Wilhelm Xaver von Nagel zur Loburg and his mother Anna Adolphine von Nagel zu Herl. When he was baptized on April 21, 1748, he was given the name of his godfather of the prince-elector and prince-bishop of Münster, Clemens August von Bayern , who later patronized him.

Military career

Like his father, Nagel zur Loburg was earmarked for a military career. On May 15, 1755, at the age of seven, he received the captain's patent . From 1764 to 1765 he went to school with the Jesuits Aegidius Neissen and Jacob la Chambre in Cologne and then from 1766 in 1769 with the Jesuits Johann Heinrich von Kerens and Leopold Steinbacher at the Theresianum in Vienna . 1769 he joined the abdomen company a Clemens August. On July 18, 1778 he became a colonel in the cavalry, on October 21, 1787 lieutenant colonel , on July 3, 1789 colonel . In the First Coalition War he fought for the imperial army ( Austria ) and was wounded and captured by the French in 1796, but exchanged the following year. The war invalid was promoted to major general on June 28, 1800 . Between the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 - the King of Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm III. , was the sovereign in Münster - and in the battle of Jena and Auerstedt in 1806 he tried to join the Prussians. Before the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 he had become a member of the Legion of Honor , after the Battle of Waterloo on October 18, 1815, Friedrich Wilhelm III. to swear.

Private life

In 1780 he married Anna Clementine Wilhelmine von Heereman von Zuydtwyck . On April 12, 1779 he was sworn to knight in Münster.

In view of the debts inherited from their father, which was triggered by the affair surrounding Nienburg Castle and the building of the Loburg, the three children compared each other in the following way in 1778: The eldest son, Clemens August von Nagel, should after the sale of the Nagel's goods and get what is left to pay off debts. Ludwig von Nagel 2000 Reichstaler, Friedrich von Nagel 3000 Reichstaler and Elisabeth Bernhardine von Nagel (1756–1809) 1000 Reichstaler to cover their claims as a child. As a result, Clemens August fell further into the debt trap. On February 26, 1778, Clemens August von Nagel leased the Loburg house and main estate to Stephan Rövener. He then moved to the Keuschenburg house near Ostenfelde , which was no longer his property, but the von Nagel family had legally enforced the usufructuary right . In 1785 Clemens August had to cede the castle to Friedrich Clemens von Elverfeldt zu Dahlhausen and Steinhausen through a foreclosure auction . At the same time he also led a lawsuit for the Kattmanns Kamp , from 1785 to 1803. In this, however, he was able to fend off the resale obligation to Friedrich Clemens on May 12, 1803.

His constant vacillations between the German and French camps were reproached for him in the Münster knighthood. He therefore referred to the sale of the sword of honor (1819), which he had received from Louis Henri Loison in 1807 .

In 1827, shortly before his death, Clemens August, always suffering from financial difficulties, had to replace (financial compensation) and allodify the Keuschenburg estate, which had previously been a fief, to the owner.

He died after a painful illness on February 12, 1828 in Munster "in devotion to God" after he had donated the anointing of the sick at his own request . His tomb has not been preserved.

Poems

Some of his poems are still preserved, which result from his correspondence with his relatives:
