Cobalt (II) formate can be produced from cobalt (II) carbonate and formic acid.

A synthesis from cobalt (II) chloride and D - xylose in ethanol has also been published.

The water of crystallization was first determined by H. Stallo in 1878, the crystal structure of cobalt (II) formate dihydrate was first investigated in 1966. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system in the space group P 2 1 / c (space group no. 14) with the lattice parameters a = 8.68  Å , b = 7.16 Å, c = 9.27 Å and β = 97.4 ° . In the unit cell contains four formula units . It is isomorphic to many other formates of divalent transition metals (e.g. nickel , manganese , magnesium , copper , zinc , iron and cadmium formate ). Elemental cobalt can be obtained by reductive decomposition of cobalt (II) formate at 300–420 ° C.
