Coeloneurum ferrugineum is a plant type from the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae) and is the only type of genus Coeloneurum .

description

Coeloneurum ferrugineum is a 2.6 to 3.3 m high tree or shrub with narrow, leathery leaves . The extraaxillary, five-fold flowers stand individually and are almost perennial. Your chalice is bell-shaped. The yellow to light yellow crown has a short corolla tube and a wide coronet. The coronet itself is deeply lobed. Five stamens and a double ovary are formed. A single ovule is formed for each ovary compartment . The fruit is an egg-shaped berry . The seeds are relatively large compared to other nightshades. No endosperm is formed. The straight embryo has thick cotyledons that are significantly longer than the small radicle.

Occurrence and locations

The species occurs in the Antilles . The locations are very dry.

Systematics

The assignment of the genus to the nightshade family has been questioned for a long time, so Armando Hunziker , for example, in his systematics of the nightshade family, excludes this and three other genera from the family based on the seed morphology and assigns them to a separate Goetzeaceae family.

Molecular biological studies have shown, however, that the genera belonging to the Goetzeaceae belong to the nightshade family together with the genera Duckeodendron and Metternichia . Richard Olmstead leads them in his family system in a subfamily Goetzeoideae. The relationships to the related genera are shown in the following cladogram.

Duckeodendron

 Metternichia

 Coeloneurum

 Henoonia

 Espadaea

 Goetzea
