The Coeur d'Alene River is a 60 km long tributary of the Coeur d'Alene Lake in the Idaho Panhandle in the northwest of the US state Idaho .
The Coeur d'Alene River arises at the confluence of its two headwaters, North Fork and South Fork Coeur d'Alene River , northwest of the village of Pinehurst. From there it flows initially in a westerly and later in a west-southwest direction to Coeur d'Alene Lake. West of Cataldo is Coeur d'Alene's Old Mission State Park on the right bank of the river. The river drains an area of 3763 km². The mean discharge at the mouth is 77 m³ / s.
On the railway line of the disused railway line, which starts in Mullan along the course of the South Fork and then along the main river, an asphalt bike path was created, which has the status of a state park as the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes .
Tributaries
The 110 km long North Fork Coeur d'Alene River rises in the Coeur d'Alene Mountains 10 km east of Lake Pend Oreille . From there it initially flows in a south-easterly direction. He then turns west near Prichard. 7 km above the mouth, the approximately 60 km long Little North Fork Coeur d'Alene River meets the river from the right. The North Fork Coeur d'Alene River drains an area of 2317 km². The mean discharge at the mouth is 53 m³ / s.
The South Fork Coeur d'Alene River has its source in the Bitterroot Range on the Montana border . It flows in a westerly direction through the so-called Silver Valley and after about 55 kilometers meets the North Fork at Pinehurst . The catchment area covers 743 km². The mean discharge at the mouth is 15 m³ / s. On the river at is Kellogg of Bunker Hill Mine and Smelting Complex with several former mines, was where formerly Silver promoted and then smelted. Heavy metals found their way into the environment and into the river and are still polluting the waters downstream. From Mullan, Interstate 90 runs alongside the river.
