The Columbus Panhandles were an American American football team .
founding
The Columbus Panhandles were founded by railroad workers in Columbus , Ohio in 1900 or 1901 . The team did not initially belong to any league. In 1904, Joseph F. Carr , a sports writer and manager of a local baseball team , took over the team. That year, the Columbus team played their first two games in the Ohio League . However, the team only played twice, in 1905 and 1906 the game was completely stopped. In 1907, the team was revived and play operations in the Ohio League resumed. From 1909 to 1915, the Panhandles played their home games at Indianola Park , an amusement park in Columbus. After 1915 the team did not have its own home ground. The Panhandles could not win a championship until the dissolution of the Ohio League.
National Football League
With the participation of Joseph F. Carr , the American Professional Football Association (APFA) was founded in Canton , Ohio, in 1920 . The league was renamed the National Football League (NFL) two years later. The Panhandles began playing in the newly founded league in 1920. On October 3, 1920, they played the first APFA game in history against the Dayton Triangles . The team coached by Ted Nesser lost the game 14-0. From the game year 1922, the Panhandles wore their home games in Neil Park . After the 1921 season, Joseph Carr took over the management of the NFL from Jim Thorpe . Carr remained the owner of the Panhandles until 1922 and then gave ownership of the team to local business people who renamed the team Columbus Tigers . However, it did not succeed in establishing the Tigers as the top team in the NFL. After the 1926 season, the Tigers stopped playing.
