Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 (Original title: Red Alert 2 ) is a real-time strategy game developed by Westwood Studios , which was released in October 2000. The re-strengthened Soviet troops land in North America like a raid in order to finally bring their old adversary to his knees. Together with Command & Conquer: Red Alert and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 and their extensions, it forms the Red Alert Universe.

development

Even before the Tiberian Sun was released, Westwood announced a sequel to Red Alert.

Red Alert 2 uses two-dimensional graphics. It is the last part of the Command & Conquer series that uses them.

action

The Soviet Union, ruled by Alexander Romanov after its defeat on red alert , who was installed by the Western powers and was supposed to ensure lasting peace, triggers a new east-west conflict with a surprise attack on the USA.

As in the previous series, there are two final sequences: either the Soviets gain world domination and lead humanity into a communist dictatorship, or the Allies win.

In contrast to the previous version, the German version was not censored and the soldiers remained human like in the original version.

Important persons

Allies

The council of war
The German Chancellor, the French Prime Minister, the Prime Minister of Great Britain and the US President form the Allied High Command with the Council of War.
President Michael Dugan
Michael Dugan (played by Ray Wise ) is the President of the United States and Allied Commander in Chief on Red Alert 2 . He and the US are threatened by Romanov and the Soviet Union.
Major General Ben Carville
Major General Ben Carville (played by Barry Corbin ) is one of the highest American generals and is later blown up by a "Crazy Ivan". The leap in time in Yuri's revenge can prevent his death.
Special Agent Tanya Adams
For more information on Tanya Adams, see Red Alert .
Lieutenant Eva Lee
Lieutenant Eva Lee is an Allied Intelligence & Combat officer, comparable to EVA in The Tiberium Conflict (where the EVA in the Tiberium series is a computer (electronic video assistant)). She is played by Athena Massey , who also appeared in Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun , where she played the pilot of the Kodiak .
Albert Einstein
More information about Albert Einstein can be found under Red Alert .

Soviets

Prime Minister Alexander Romanov
Alexander Romanov was installed as regent of the Soviet Union on red alert after the Allied victory because he stood up for peace in defiance of the Communist Party. At first he was very cooperative, but then surprisingly gave the order to attack the USA. This is how the story of Red Alert 2 begins . Depending on which party you play, Prime Minister Romanov is either shot in bed on Yuri's behalf (Soviets) or captured and deposed (Allies) by Agent Tanya.
Because of his surname and because he speaks of the legacy of the Romanovs , it can be assumed that he descended from the Russian imperial family.
Yuri
Yuri (played by Udo Kier ) is the chief strategist of Soviet Prime Minister Alexander Romanov. Yuri has the gift of mind control and forms the opponent in the expansion of Yuri's Vengeance as the third independent party. It is known, and is also mentioned by Yuri in the game, that Stalin had a great interest in psychic abilities and promoted him. The threat posed by Yuri is averted when he travels back to the time of the dinosaurs with the Allied time machine or is locked up in a psychological prison by the Allies, depending on whether you play Soviet or Allies.
Yuri is also spoken in the German version by the German actor Udo Kier.
General Vladimir
General Vladimir (played by Adam Greggor ) is a Soviet henpecked hero who is accused by Yuri of the murder of Romanov. It was he who destroyed Chicago with an atomic bomb. He was later arrested and executed in Washington, DC .
Lieutenant Zofia
Lieutenant Zofia (played by Aleksandra Kaniak ) is a female officer and the Soviet equivalent of Eva.
Boris
Boris is the Soviet counterpart to Tanya in Yuri's Revenge . As the main armament it has a AK-74 - assault rifle and can also with a laser enemy buildings Mark for an air attack.

Gameplay

The missions of the campaign are linked by videos, as with the previous ones. In contrast to its predecessor, the missions mostly take place in urban areas, where the course of streets and the position of bridges and civil buildings, which can also be occupied, have an impact on the fighting.

In multiplayer mode or battle you choose a nation. Each of these has different special units:

Allies

  • Germany: Tank destroyer (effective against vehicles - ineffective against infantry, terror drones and buildings)
  • France: "Grand Cannon" (most effective defense system - but uses a lot of energy, money and construction time)
  • Great Britain: Sniper (effective against infantry - ineffective against vehicles and buildings)
  • South Korea: "Black Eagle" (improved Harrier fighter aircraft )
  • USA: Parachutists (more parachutists than those of the "airport tech building")

Soviets and Allies

  • Iraq: Desolators (infantryman armed with a nuclear radiation weapon who can radiate land)
  • Cuba: suicide bomber
  • Libya: demolition truck (truck armed with mini-bomb)
  • Russia: Tesla tank (a tank that can fire over walls with Tesla beams)

reception

Red alert 2 received mostly positive ratings ( GameRankings : 86.29% / Metacritic : 84%).

“With outdated technology, Westwood has once again put together a program that is worth playing, which is fast and beginner-friendly, but which should not disappoint veterans either. However , it cannot keep up with the multiplayer brilliance of StarCraft or the complexity of Age of Empires 2. "

- Gunnar Lott : GameStar

While in Red Alert even direct references to The Tiberiumkonflikt gave these were missing in Red Alert 2 completely. Many gamers therefore believe that the Tiberium and Red Alert scenarios represent parallel universes.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge is the expansion of Red Alert 2 . It offers two new campaigns with seven missions each for Allies and Soviets. Both parties also include new buildings and units. It also offers a third party for the multiplayer mode with Yuri's army.

New content

For the second time in a Command & Conquer game, a third war party was integrated (previously CABAL in Tiberian Sun - Firestorm ), but it can only be played in battle and in multiplayer mode with its exotic units from the start. In single player mode you usually have to fight against these units, but engineers can take control of Yuri's buildings and then use them yourself to produce units, for example. Yuri's troops include:

  • Magnetic tanks that attract other vehicles ("magnetrons")
  • "Super brains" that can psychologically influence almost all units (a maximum of 3 at the same time, if the maximum is exceeded, the unit slowly destroys itself)
  • flying saucers (Yuris Luftwaffe) ("sliding disk")
  • Snipers who shoot poison arrows ("virus")
  • a berserker reminiscent of the Hulk ("Brute")
  • A light tank, armed with a Gatling cannon, which can be used against both air and ground units ("Gatling tank").
  • For the first time in the C&C series, instead of the usual collectors and stationary refineries, Yuri has a collector who converts to a refinery (and vice versa) by command, from which slaves then mine ore (this unit can be built as a building or vehicle) (" Slave collectors ").
  • As a so-called “super weapon”, Yuri possesses the “Psycho-Dominator”, a mind control device that damages buildings and subjects almost every enemy unit to a mindwash so that it belongs permanently to Yuri's troops. As a counterpart to the Chronosphere and the Iron Curtain, Yuri also has the "gene manipulator", which converts infantrymen (both own and enemy) into brute units and subjects them to Yuri's control.

The plot includes the hunt for the traitor Yuri, who was the former commander of the Soviet psycho-troops in the previous war. In the turmoil of the war, he used his enormous potential to build his own, highly bizarre psycho army to usurp world domination . The missions take the player to new locations such as Australia , Egypt and even the moon. Thanks to Einstein's time machine, you can even travel to the Cretaceous Period .

Press review

Reviews

“Anyone who buys Yuri's Vengeance or any other product from the C&C real-time strategy series and is then annoyed that it is always the same game should start to learn from history. As always, the opponents shine with awkwardness and their own units are not exactly blessed with wisdom, but the missions can still provide a lot of entertainment thanks to the funny background story. Because Yuri's Vengeance is a typical real-time strategy game that does not demand any clever military skills from the player, but instead puts the focus of the missions on action and fun. And once again C&C is kidding itself: In a mission set in Hollywood, strong civilians named Stallone and Frankenstein appear - a welcome addition to their own army. "
