Communication Breakdown is a song by the British rock band Led Zeppelin , released in 1969 on their debut album Led Zeppelin .

General

For the hammering guitar riff, Jimmy Page amplified his Fender Telecaster with a small Supro amplifier. During the solo he also used a completely closed Vox wah-wah pedal to achieve the "guitar in a shoebox" sound. "Communication Breakdown" is one of the few songs on which Page also sings background vocals .

The song was a popular live number at Led Zeppelin concerts and the only song played every year the band toured. It was usually played at the beginning of a concert or as an encore.

In the US , the title was released as the B-side of the single " Good Times Bad Times ". The 1997 album Led Zeppelin BBC Sessions contains the song three times, each time with slightly different improvisations. Three live versions of appearances on the TV show Tous En Scene in Paris in 1969, on Danmarks Radio in 1969 and in the Royal Albert Hall in 1970 can be seen on the Led Zeppelin DVD . "Communication Breakdown" is also one of the few songs by Led Zeppelin for which the band created an exactly lip-synchronized video, also released on the Led Zeppelin DVD .

legacy

Andy Shernoff, bassist for The Dictators , explained that pages fast, after beaten down guitar riff in "Communication Breakdown" an inspiration for Johnny Ramones (guitarist of the Ramones was) to beaten down guitar style. Ramone stated in the documentary Ramones: The True Story that he improved this knocked-down touch technique by playing the song over and over in his early career.

The song is known for its use in films, especially in a military setting. In the Simpsons episode "GI Homer", a group of soldiers play the guitar riff from "Communication Breakdown" during an army commercial video. The song was also used as a score for the film Small Soldiers .

"Communication Breakdown" is on the 2003 list "The 1,001 Greatest Songs to Download Right Now!" of the Blender magazine.

Jeff Healey recorded an instrumental version of Communication Breakdown for his album Cover to Cover ,
