Conceição do Jacuípe , officially Município de Conceição do Jacuípe , popularly called Berimbau , is a small town in the Brazilian state of Bahia and is 97 km northwest of the capital Salvador . It has around 33,000 inhabitants who are called Conjacuipenser.

location

The closest locations are clockwise: Coração de Maria , Teodoro Sampaio , Terra Nova , Amélia Rodrigues , Santo Amaro and Feira de Santana , about 20 km northwest.

The city is at an altitude of 248 m, the municipality reaches further inland about 400 m height on the border between the Recôncavo and the Sertão bahiano . The area of the municipality is 117.5 km², the population density 256.3 inhabitants per km².

history

The settlement began in the 17th century by the Portuguese, who built sugar cane plantations and sugar mills in the area . Black African slaves were used as labor by the slave traders in Salvador de Bahia , whose descendants today make up the largest contingent of the Afro-Brazilian population . In 1898 a trading post was built, which became known as Feira do Berimbau (Berimbau Market) as a magnet for musicians and the berimbaus , a simple musical instrument that had been manufactured and sold there since the beginning of the 20th century . The city nickname is also derived from this. In 1949 the settlement, now known as Povoado do Berimbau , received electricity from hydropower. It was renamed on December 30, 1953 and raised to the Vila de Conceição do Jacuípe and was administratively under the city of Santo Amaro. In the course of the territorial reforms in the early 1960s, it was spun off from Santo Amaro and received on October 20, 1961 the status of a municipal town under the name Município de Conceição do Jacuípe . The name is a combination of Nossa Senhora da Conceição , epithet of the Virgin Mary and patron saint of the city, and Rio Jacuípe , in whose catchment area the municipality is located.

The place had a female mayor, Tania Yoshida , since late 2004 , which was a complete novelty in the more conservative state of Bahia. After two successful re-elections with considerable financial outlay, financed by federal funds, she was criticized for having spent a large part of the community budget on shows and entertainment and was ultimately voted out. However, the successor turned out to be problematic, as it made people insecure due to factors such as mass unemployment, crime and state economic control, and among the elderly, even illiterate, rural populations sometimes chose unpredictably. Yoshida was stripped of her eligibility for eight years, which did not prevent her from running again in the 2012 local elections, but she was defeated and her votes were collected by the electoral tribunal.

City administration

After the local elections in 2012, the city prefect (executive) was Normélia Maria Rocha Correia of the Partido Republicano Brasileiro (PRB) for the 2013 to 2016 term , which she achieved through an electoral alliance of 13 parties. In the local elections in Brazil in 2016 , she was re-elected for the 2017-2020 term. The legislature lies with the Câmara Municipal, the city council.

Together with 23 other municipalities, Conceição do Jacuípe bon formed the Feira de Santana microregion from 1989 to 2017 , which is one of five microregions of the Centro-Norte Baiano mesoregion . Since 2011, it is part of the metropolitan area of Feira de Santana ( Região Metropolitana de Feira de Santana) .

economy

Conceição do Jacuípe is an important growing place for vegetables and herbs in the state of Bahia. Japanese and Polish immigrants began planting on a smaller scale in the 1960s, which expanded significantly over time. Other economic factors are tobacco cultivation as well as cattle and poultry farming .

Conceição do Jacuípe differs from its neighboring communities in terms of land division. While in the neighboring communities Amelia Rodriges and Coração de Maria mainly large landowners (Portuguese latifundarios ) cultivate the land, the ownership structure in Berimbau is characterized by smaller private farms. While the neighboring communities have seen little economic growth worth mentioning in the last 30 years, Conceição do Jacuípe has grown considerably. The good connection to the transport infrastructure is advantageous for the location. Since the beginning of the 2000s, therefore, and due to fiscal policy measures, further company branches have been recorded, including a shoe factory, a factory for medical disposables and a large distribution station for soft drinks and beer.

Infrastructure

The BA-084 runs through the city, while the BA- 324 runs south and provides a direct connection to the two largest cities in the state, Feira de Santana and Salvador de Bahia.
