The Côney is the first significant left tributary of the Upper Saône in France . The catchment area of the 55 km long river is 317 km².

The river has its source in the Vôge , a high plateau between the South Vosges and the Monts Faucilles at an altitude of approx. 410 meters above sea level. The spring at Lion Faing in the municipality of Dounoux in the southwest of the Vosges department is only five kilometers from the Moselle near Épinal . This fact and the geographical conditions of a relatively low and easily crossed watershed led to early plans to build a canal that leads from the Rhône over the canalized Saône to the Moselle and thus to the Rhine . The plans came to fruition with the Canal des Vosges , which opened in 1884.

From the source to the mouth, the Côney flows in a south-westerly direction and first passes the municipalities of Uriménil and Uzemain . From river kilometer 17, the Canal des Vosges accompanies the Côney on the right side to the confluence with the Saône near the municipality of Corre at an altitude of 222 m above sea level. The canal descends 83 meters in 27 locks. Two thirds of the river's course lies on the side of the Grand Est region , the lower section in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region ( Haute-Saône department ).

In the catchment area of the Côney are the thermal baths Bains-les-Bains and the small town of Xertigny .

Tributaries of the Côney over 10 kilometers in length:

  • Ruisseau Le Bagnerot
  • Ruisseau de Buzegney
  • Ruisseau de Cone
  • Ruisseau de Gruey
  • Ruisseau du Morillon
