Konrad Hernejus

Konrad Hornejus (also: Horney, Horneius, Horne, Horn ; born November 25, 1590 in Braunschweig , † September 26, 1649 in Helmstedt ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

Born as the son of the pastor in Watenbüttel and Ölper Johannes Hornejus († 1605) and his wife Sophia († 1597), the daughter of the Brunswick citizen Georg Nielander, he was initially taught by his father. From 1601 he attended the Katharineum in Braunschweig, where he enjoyed an excellent education. His ability to write Latin and Greek in prose and verse earned him the respect of Jan Gruter and others.

In 1608 he began to study philosophical sciences at the University of Helmstedt , where he found accommodation with Johannes Caselius . Hornejus soon made such an impression on Caselius that he became his favorite student and was able to use his extensive library at will. After he had also attended lectures by Kornelius Martini , Nikolaus Gran and others, he acquired the academic degree of Master of Philosophy in 1612 . He then gave private lectures at the Helmstedt University. In 1619 he was appointed professor of ethics there - against the resistance of Basilius Sattler (1549-1624) - and after the death of Martini in 1622 he was also appointed professor of logic.

During his time at the philosophical faculty, he had excelled in writing textbooks on logic, which appeared in several editions until 1666. After long years of teaching philological and philosophical studies, he switched to theology, acquired a licentiate in theology in 1622 , became second professor in the theological faculty of the Helmstedt University in 1628 and received his doctorate in theology in 1636 . At the side of Georg Calixt he was drawn into the syncretistic dispute , whereby the representatives of Lutheran Orthodoxy revealed to him the tendency towards crypto- Catholicism.
