Cornelius Martini , also: Cornelius Martinus (* 1568 in Antwerp , † December 17, 1621 in Helmstedt ) was a theologian and representative of the Reformation .

Life

The humanistically educated son of a dikemaster and councilor left his homeland as a result of persecuting his creed and began some trips. From 1584 he studied at the University of Rostock . In Helmstedt he was able to become a member of the philosophical faculty in 1592. There he also obtained his master's degree .

At the University of Helmstedt Martini began teaching metaphysics in 1597 , based on the works of Aristotle . Although the same developments took place at the universities of Wittenberg , Altdorf and Strasbourg , Martini is now considered to be the actual founder of Protestant school metaphysics.

With these lectures he came within the Protestant doctrine in an opposition to conservative positions. These turned against the influences of philosophy in the theological doctrine. At the Regensburg Religious Discussion of 1601 he condemned the Ramists' doctrine and their position of double truth . Before that, he was already involved in Hofmann's dispute at the University of Helmstedt in 1598, working in the same direction .

With his strict demarcation between theology and metaphysics, he represented an idealistic standpoint on science, which he consistently defended. In doing so, he also paved the way for natural science teaching in university teaching.
