The Constitution was one of two ships of the MARCOM type P3-S2-DL2. At 23,754 GRT, she was slightly larger than her sister ship Independence (23,719 GRT). The ship was built by Bethlehem Steel in Quincy, Massachusetts in the United States . The shipping company American Export Lines used it in liner services between New York and Genoa and Naples in Italy . In 1959 the ship was rebuilt. From 1968 it was used temporarily for cruises before it in September 1969 in Jacksonville launched was.

In 1974 the ship was sold to the Atlantic Far East Line and renamed Oceanic Constitution . In 1981 it was sold to American Hawaii Cruises and renamed again to Constitution . The ship was now used after another conversion for cruises to Hawaii . In July 1995, the ship, which no longer met the SOLAS regulations , was launched in Portland and sold to Chinese abandoners in 1997. On November 17, 1997, it sank north of Hawaii on the way to the scrapping yard .
