In 1974 the ship was sold to the Atlantic Far East Line and renamed Oceanic Constitution . In 1981 it was sold to American Hawaii Cruises and renamed again to Constitution . The ship was now used after another conversion for cruises to Hawaii . In July 1995, the ship, which no longer met the SOLAS regulations , was launched in Portland and sold to Chinese abandoners in 1997. On November 17, 1997, it sank north of Hawaii on the way to the scrapping yard .
The ship was the filming location for the American sitcom I Love Lucy , the feature film The Great Love of My Life . and the episode The Nightmare Ship (in the original All thieves on deck ) of the television series Magnum , in which the Constitution can also be seen in some exterior shots.
In August 1965, the 74-year-old Titanic survivor Gretchen Leopold died on board the Constitution .
