Corey Dwight Benjamin (born February 24, 1978 in Compton , California ) is a retired American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for several years. After his time at Fontana High School in Fontana, California , Benjamin played college basketball for Oregon State University and was selected 28th in the first round by the Chicago Bulls in the 1998 NBA Draft .

NBA career

The 1998/99 NBA season only started in February 1999 due to a lockout . Instead of the usual 82 games, only 50 games were played in the regular season . The all-star game was also canceled. Superstar Michael Jordan , like Benjamin in the Chicago Bulls roster, resigned on January 13, 1999, a few weeks before the lockout ended. Benjamin then announced that he would be able to defeat basketball legend Jordan in a "1 on 1" game . Michael Jordan then appeared unexpectedly one day at the Bulls' training session at the Berto Center and challenged Benjamin. After his win, Jordan said goodbye with the words: “Don't call me out of retirement to do this shit again!”
Benjamin stayed with the Bulls for three seasons, but never got beyond the role of a supplementary player. He experienced his best phase in December 1999 when he scored double-digit points in almost every one of his games. Benjamin also achieved his career high that month: on December 30, 1999, he contributed 21 points when his Chicago Bulls were defeated by the Minnesota Timberwolves .

On September 18, 2002, he was signed as a free agent by the Orlando Magic ; however, he was dismissed on October 6, without having played a competitive game for this franchise .

During the 2002–03 NBA season, he signed two 10-day contracts with the Atlanta Hawks ; the first on January 22, 2003. Between his engagements in Chicago and Atlanta he played briefly for Sutor Basket Montegranaro in Italy and for the Southern California Surf in the American Basketball Association and for the (North) Charleston Lowgators in the newly formed National Basketball Development league League (NBDL; today's NBA G-League ).

International career

Benjamin spent the last few years of his career abroad. For the 2003/04 season he moved first to France in the Ligue Nationale de Basketball for the Élan Sportif Chalonnais team , then to China for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers (2004/05 season).
For the 2005/06 season Benjamin joined the Guaros de Lara association in Venezuela , followed by a guest appearance in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional ( Puerto Rico ) with the Conquistadores de Guaynabo .

Benjamin then returned to Europe to play for Benfica Lisbon in Portugal in the 2006/07 season .

The last stop of his career was again in Asia , where Benjamin played for the Daegu Orions in the Korean basketball league.

Personal

At the Oregon State Beavers, Benjamin played on the same team as his older brother Sonny.
