The Guaros de Lara BBC is a professional basketball club from Barquisimeto in the Venezuelan state of Lara . The club, which is named after the nickname Guaros ( literal translation : "Schnapps") of the inhabitants of the region, was only founded in 2003 and was three times national runner-up in Venezuela until recently. After the last runner-up in 2015, the club also took part in the continental FIBA Liga de las Américas , which they won in 2016. The club then also won the Intercontinental Cup at the beginning of the following season.

history

The Guaros de Lara were not the first professional basketball team in the state, because in 1981 Alexis Saldivia acquired the Panteras franchise from Táchira and relocated it to Barquisimeto in Lara. Two years later, this team, led by the naturalized American Sam Shepherd as MVP, won the championship against the Gaiteros from Zulia . The new owner Amílcar Gómez moved the headquarters of the Panteras in 1986 to the capital Caracas . With the establishment of the Liga Profesional de Baloncesto (LPB) in 1993 as the new top division, the Bravos also returned a new professional franchise to the state, which stayed here for five years before returning to the neighboring state of Portuguesa .

Finally, the Guaros were founded in 2003 and moved to the Domo Bolivariano in Barquisimeto, built in 1982, which once again became the home of a professional basketball team. A year later, in 2004, the former NBA champion Carl Herrera , with whom he moved into the LPB final series twice in 2005 and 2006, was defeated by defending champion Marinos de Anzoátegui and the then record champion Trotamundos de Carabobo . In 2007 Herrera, who among other things had ensured the only Olympic participation of a Venezuelan national basketball team with Sam Shepherd in 1992 , left the club at the age of 41 and ended his career a year later.

The team was also unable to celebrate any further successes until the Venezuelan national coach Néstor García, who came from Argentina , returned to the club he had already trained once in 2007. Finally, in 2015, the club again reached the final series of the LPB, in which they again lost to defending champion Marinos. Then the runner-up took part in the FIBA Liga de las Américas , which was won in the final in 2016 against the Brazilian defending champion Associação Bauru ; The US American, former NBA professional Damien Wilkins became the MVP of the final game . After García, as national coach, led Venezuela to the second Olympic participation in 2016 after winning the American Championship in 2015 , Iván Déniz took over the club team and was able to lead them to the Intercontinental Cup title six months after winning the league de las Américas . After the Euroleague was in dispute with FIBA Europe , the title winner of the FIBA Europe Cup 2015/16 was named as the European representative . Against the Fraport Skyliners at their home venue in Frankfurt am Main , the Guaros de Lara with Zach Graham as MVP were able to win the World Cup in the only final game with 74:69.
