Coverdale / Page was a blues rock band of the two British musicians David Coverdale and Jimmy Page in the early 1990s . They released a single album and then stopped working on the project.

history

After the end of Led Zeppelin (1980), Jimmy Page had started several projects with which he was more or less successful, including XYZ , The Honeydrippers or The Firm , before he finally recorded his only solo album in 1988 with the title Outrider . He had also appeared on various occasions as a guest musician on the albums of other artists, including the 1988 album Now and Zen by his former Led Zeppelin colleague Robert Plant .

David Coverdale became known in 1973 as the successor to the singer Ian Gillan at Deep Purple and had subsequently founded Whitesnake . With this group he had great success worldwide in 1987 ( 1987 ) and 1989 ( Slip of the Tongue ) and reached the top ten of the respective album charts in Great Britain and the USA . In 1990 he was a guest musician on guitarist Steve Vai's album Passion and Warfare and recorded the song Last Note of Freedom for the soundtrack to the film Days of Thunder .

In 1991 Coverdale and Page teamed up. Some critics suspected that the reason for this was that Robert Plant had withdrawn in the course of a planned comeback by Led Zeppelin and Page wanted to annoy him by working with Coverdale. Plant himself repeatedly mocked Coverdale / Page in interviews when asked about it.

The album that Coverdale and Page worked on with producer Mike Fraser and musicians Denny Carmassi ( drums , formerly Montrose ), Jorge Casas ( bass ), Ricky Phillips (bass), John Harris (harmonica) and Lester Mendez ( keyboard ), was created between 1991 and the early winter of 1992 in various studios in London , Vancouver , Miami and Hook City and was published in March 1993 under the title Coverdale / Page .

It hit the charts in Great Britain, the USA and Germany as well as in other countries and was awarded platinum in Canada and the USA and silver in Great Britain. Despite these initial successes, the album quickly disappeared from the public eye; a planned tour of arenas in the USA had to be canceled.

In December 1993 Coverdale and Page went on tour in Japan , where the band was completed by the musicians Denny Carmassi (drums), Brett Tuggle (keyboard) and Guy Pratt (bass). On this tour, in addition to the songs from their joint album, well-known pieces by Led Zeppelin ( Rock N 'Roll , Kashmir, Black Dog ) and Whitesnake ( Still of the Night, Here I Go Again ) were played.

After the end of the Japan tour, the project was considered a failure. Page almost immediately formed Page & Plant with Robert Plant; they released the album No Quarter in 1994 . Coverdale teamed up again with his former guitarist Adrian Vandenberg and released the CD Restless Heart in 1997 , which was originally planned as a solo album, but reappeared under the name "Whitesnake" under pressure from the record company.
