history

Samuel Shaw, an entrepreneur, bought land in what was then Oconto County in the 1880s . With the help of Major Frank P. Crandon, a Chicago and Northwestern Railroad official , he successfully lobbied for the creation of Forest County, founded in 1887. In recognition of his help, the county and county seat were named after Crandon. Rail traffic in the region began shortly afterwards with the Soo Line Railroad , but a branch line did not reach the city until the turn of the century.

The timber industry determined the development and growth of the city in the early days of its existence. In 1891 the Page and Landeck Lumber Company acquired a hardwood forest area near Crandon and by 1902 built a larger sawmill near Clear Lake in north Crandon (later the sawmill was called Keith & Hiles Lumber Mill ). The population of Crandon grew from 800 to more than 2,400 in just a few years. The railroad also brought Kentucky settlers and lumberjacks to the area, needed for northern Wisconsin's thriving logging industry. The company's main plant has been relocated to Crandon from Glasgow , Kentucky. The city was officially registered in 1909 after construction of the court began. Today the timber industry has lost its predominant role in the northern Midwest , although some companies are still active in the nearby Nicolet National Forest .
