Cube 2: Hypercube is a Canadian science fiction / horror film released in 2002. It is the sequel to Cube (1997). Cube Zero , the prequel for Cube and Cube 2 , followed in 2004. The film was first shown in Germany on July 29, 2002 as part of the Fantasy Film Festival .

action

As in the previous film Cube , several people wake up at the beginning of the film in a complex of futuristic, interconnected cubes with an edge length of about five meters. With each cube, you can enter a different room via a kind of automatic door on each of the six sides.

Some people get together quickly and travel as a group. Most of them do not know each other and come from different states in the USA. They don't know how they got into the cube complex. The protagonists quickly realize that the complex in which they are located does not follow the usual physical laws. Despite the gigantic number of possible paths, there is only a very small number of different rooms. Gravitation is also sometimes unusual: it is possible to fall “upwards” or “to the side” in a new space.

At the very beginning you see Rebecca Young (you can see her IZON company ID) waking up in the Cube. She goes through a hatch and falls up.

The actual plot begins with the group finding Colonel Thomas Maquire , who was trying to hang himself. He had woken up earlier and found his trunk empty. He seemed to know where he was and began to pray. The young hacker Max Reisler recognizes Maquire and says he is a high-tech expert at the Pentagon. Then a seemingly confused elderly lady named Mrs. Paley joins the group.

When suddenly the wall of a room begins to move, the group flees; however, has to leave Colonel Maquire behind, who locks himself up with handcuffs in the increasingly narrow space. Kate Filmore , a psychotherapist, manages to escape through the hatch at the last moment, but looks back in the hatch opposite to see herself. A member of the group ( Jerry Whitehall ) shortly thereafter admits that he helped design the touch sensors; asserts, however, not to know about the rest of the plan. Jerry puts forward the thesis that the group is in a tesseract , i.e. a cube with four dimensions . The group also finds note 60659 in a room . A little later they come across a room in which there is another person named Julia , who then joins the group. To their surprise, they also find an exact copy of Jerry's watch.

In the next room they find a dying man whose chest is littered with mathematical formulas. Both Mrs. Paley and Max identify the body as Dr. Phil Rosenzweig , an expert on quantum chaos . In addition, the group learns from the confused Mrs. Paley that she is a retired theoretical mathematician and is connected to the mysterious hacker Alex Trusk and worked for the weapons company IZON . When Mrs. Paley opens a gate, she suddenly sees a kind of reflection of herself in the other room, which, however, takes her hand as it is being stabbed by Simon . Jerry suspects that the scene is a parallel reality. Some others believe in an optical illusion instead, and the group begins to quarrel and suspect one another more and more.

While most of the group is asleep, Simon admits to Jerry that he is a private investigator and is currently processing a people search. He shows him a picture of the missing person , which is Rebecca Young , the IZON employee. Suddenly a small square appears in the middle of the room, which quickly transforms into a sharp-edged, large and highly complex geometric object that almost fills the entire room. While most of them can escape to another room, the object catches Jerry , who is then killed and disappears. Kate saves the frightened blind Sasha . After a while, the geometric figure disappears as suddenly as it appeared. Sasha and Kate are now cut off from the rest of the group and are traveling alone for the time being. You are puzzling over the meaning of the number 60659 .

Simon , who is the only one with a knife, threatens Julia , Max and Mrs. Paley . When a wall begins to move again, Julia and Max flee together, while Simon stabs Mrs. Paley, who is clinging to him, and thus escapes. From then on, Simon is traveling alone, but to his surprise finds Jerry , who, however, cannot remember the previous incidents and claims to have just woken up. Simon stabs him too, and later he always finds new "versions" of Jerry , which he also stabs.

Meanwhile, Julia and Max arrive in rooms in which time passes at different speeds. Max tells Julia that he programmed a computer game called Relativity , which is based on the principle that time passes at different speeds in different places. As you are currently experiencing. He goes on to say that he cannot market the computer game because he is in a legal dispute with a company called CyberThrill that stole his idea. Julia now reveals that CyberThrill is only a subsidiary of IZON and that she represents these people as a lawyer. Probably because of the hopelessness of their current situation, the two begin to kiss a little later and then have sexual intercourse. They fall into a new trap, a kind of time trap.

Simon then suddenly and unexpectedly comes across the missing Becky Young . They both embrace warmly, with Simon indicating that her parents commissioned him and that he has been looking for her for a long time. However, since he had previously admitted in a secret conversation with Jerry that he also worked for IZON , and he was also mad , he stabs her too.

Meanwhile, Kate and Sasha arrive in a room where all the bodies are lying. These are arranged as they had been some time before when the group slept, as if they had never woken up.

Blind Sasha confides in Kate that she is actually that mysterious hacker Alex Trusk and that she helped design the Tesseract. Kate later finds Julia and Max , among others , whose bodies must have aged in fast motion because their crumbling corpses are still entwined in the act of love. She also sees the corpse of the hanged Colonel Maquire in a room , as if they had never freed him from his rope. And she sees herself at the beginning of her escape when the wall moved and the group had to leave Colonel Maquire behind - now from the other side.

Finally, Kate and Sasha arrive in a room where all the drawings, markings and corpses that were previously placed in different rooms come together. Sasha claims that all different realities will come together in one room before the complex falls apart.

When Simon suddenly lurks behind a hatch that Kate has just opened, she can overwhelm him, snatch the knife and stab him in the eye. But immediately afterwards Simon reappears on the other side of the cube - visibly aged and with a scarred eye - and threatens Sasha . Simon breaks Sasha 's neck, and Kate and Simon fight , who has already collected several watches from Jerry .

Kate can Simon overwhelm and takes Sasha 's necklace itself. It occurs to her that 6:06:59 is the time on Jerry's watch that the whole complex will implode. Shortly before this time, the cube begins to dissolve and a hole appears. At exactly 6:06:59 , Kate jumps through this hole and finally wakes up in a basin filled with a mercury-like substance in a spacious hall. She is greeted by an IZON official who asks about the "legacy" and success of her mission. Now it becomes clear that Kate also belongs to IZON and had an assignment. It was all about Sasha's necklace, apparently some kind of memory that contains the "legacy". Kate gives the trailer to the IZON official and is then shot from behind. The film ends with the official who received the necklace getting a call from his supervisor and saying, “ Sir. Yes, sir. Phase 2 is complete. I understand. Yes, sir. Immediately sir. “Announced.

Alternative ending

In an alternate ending, the scene towards the end when Kate “comes back” and is shot is a little longer. It becomes clear that the IZON officials did not know and only found out through Kate that Alex Trusk was a woman and that Kate had been given the task of killing him / her. Kate was also the first to successfully complete this "mission of no return". She salutes the IZON official after he praises her for how proud her country is of her. When Kate asked how long she was inside, she got the answer: 6 minutes and 59 seconds, or maybe a second more.

background

A larger budget was available for Cube 2: Hypercube , which enabled more complex special effects. However, it had a completely different cast and production crew who, according to critics, were less concerned with creating a plausible cube universe and were instead inclined to see the concept as a novelty. The frequently used Technobabble with reference to quantum mechanics , which was used to explain the functionality of the cube, is given as an example . The film was shot in Los Angeles and Toronto .

Reviews

The film did not receive as good reviews as the first film, nor was it as commercially successful.

  • The lexicon of international films judged that the film captivates with “the visual concept” , but has “considerable gaps” in terms of “dramaturgy and tension build-up .
  • Cinema described the film as "exciting" .

Awards

  • In 2003 Andrzej Sekula won a critic's award at the Fantasporto Festival. It was also nominated for best picture.
