The Cunewalder Water ( Upper Sorbian Kumwałdźanka ) is a right-hand tributary of the Upper Spree opposite the Rodewitz / Spree district of the city of Schirgiswalde-Kirschau in the Saxon district of Bautzen with a length of about eleven kilometers.
description
The brook rises west of the Kötzschauer Berg in the Lausitzer Bergland and flows between the Czorneboh mountain range and Bieleboh mountain range through a three-kilometer-wide valley in a westerly direction. The densely populated Cunewald valley forms the eastern continuation of the Wilthen-Neukircher valley basin.
The houses of Cunewalde (with the localities of Obercunewalde, Mittelcunewalde and Niedercunewalde), Weigsdorf-Köblitz (with the localities of Weigsdorf and Köblitz), Halbendorf im Gebirge and Suppo are lined up on both sides of the Cunewalder Water . In Mittelcunewalde, the otherwise barely meandering brook breaks through a 70 m thick reef of gray quartz that stretches between the cemetery over the Hoppeberg to the vineyard, and has several windings and narrow valley stretches. The Cunewald water flows in most of its upper course and in its entire middle course in a developed water profile, it is limited by bank and road retaining walls and is crossed by numerous bridges and footbridges.
Only in its lower reaches the body of water flowing in the open land on Bederwitz over and opens opposite Rodewitz / Spree in the Spree .
Tributaries are the Elzebach , the Schönberger Bach, the Butterwasser, the Teilwasser, the Neudorfer Wasser, the Ziegelthaler Wasser and the Kalte Born.
The catchment area of the Cunewald water covers an area of 32.7 km².
Centennial flood of August 7, 2010
The first days of August 2010 were rich in precipitation in the Lusatian mountains, so that the storage capacity of the soil was almost exhausted. In the afternoon of August 7th, an area of heavy precipitation reached the Cunewald valley. On this day, rainfall of 170 mm was measured in Mittelcunewalde and 165 mm in Niedercunewalde. In total, over 330 mm of precipitation fell this month, which corresponds to the average amount for half a year. The flood is estimated to be a centenary event.
Large amounts of wildly flowing water shot into the valley from the forest areas and, helped by the steep incline, carried mud and debris with it. The water level of the Cunewald water, which averages 0.30 m, swelled quickly to 3.50 m; the tributaries also led to a water level of up to 1.50 m. Blockages on bridges prevented the flood from flowing away and led to backwater. This led to the flooding of houses, commercial properties, streets and gardens. Due to the rapid rise in the tide, the Cunewald volunteer fire brigade, supported by other emergency services from unaffected areas, was only able to protect individual important objects, such as transformer stations, with sandbags and concentrated on preventing blockages on bridges and the environmental hazard from floating Oil tanks. The school enrollment ceremony in the Blauer Kugel had to end prematurely and the participants had to be brought to safety. Five people who were in mortal danger from the floods were also evacuated. After the heavy precipitation area withdrew, the flood quickly subsided. The floods in the Cunewald valley left millions of euros in damage. A total of 431 households were affected, and over 200 damage to the municipal infrastructure was recorded. This included flooded houses, jammed bridges, washed-out granite pavement and packing depots from streets (including state road S115 Erlenweg and main road in Cunewalde).
In the course of eliminating the flood damage, the municipality of Cunewalde acquired three flood-damaged residential buildings in Cunewalde (Erlenweg 6, Zur Rabinke 5 and Hauptstraße 73) to be demolished in order to straighten the Cunewalder Bach and the local thoroughfare. In Weigsdorf-Köblitz, the demolition of two commercial properties and part of the allotment garden as a retention area is being prepared. In December 2015, the renovation work on the stream wall, embankments and bridges was completed, the cost of € 200,000 was borne by the Free State of Saxony.
