Suppo ( Upper Sorbian Supow ) is a district of the city of Schirgiswalde-Kirschau in Saxony .

geography

Suppo is located southeast of Bautzen in the Lausitzer Bergland . The farmer's hamlet is located at the southwestern foot of the 402.2 m high Herrnsberg above the valley of the Cunewald water on the former railway line from Großpostwitz to Löbau . The Susanka hill to the northwest was removed by a sand pit.

history

"Soup" was first mentioned in 1419. According to Arnošt Muka, the place name is derived from the Sorbian word "sup" (vulture). The settlement always belonged to the property of the Bautzen cathedral monastery . Between 1889 and 1890 the Großpostwitz – Obercunewalde railway line was laid through the corridors of Suppo. On April 1, 1936, Suppo was incorporated into Halbendorf in the mountains . In the second half of the 20th century, two new houses were added to the three farms above the valley of the Cunewald water on the outskirts of Neueulowitz. In 1964 a sow breeding facility was built. Together with Halbendorf, Suppo was incorporated into Crostau in 1973 . Since January 1, 2011, Suppo has belonged to the city of Schirgiswalde-Kirschau .

Population and language

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 27 inhabitants in the 1880s; 14 of them were Sorbs and 13 Germans. At that time Suppo was on the extreme southern edge of the Sorbian majority area; the neighboring half village was already predominantly German at that time. The language change to German took place in the village essentially at the turn of the 20th century. Since then, the language has largely disappeared from everyday life.
