Bederwitz ( Upper Sorbian Bjedrusk ) is a district of the city of Schirgiswalde-Kirschau in Saxony .
geography
Bederwitz is located southeast of Bautzen in the Lusatian mountains. The Bauernweiler is located at the lower exit of the Cunewalder valley, just before the confluence of the Cunewalder water in the Spree , on the former Großpostwitz – Löbau railway line . The Susanka hill to the north was removed by a sand pit. The butter water flows into the Spree southwest of the village .
history
"Bederwicz" or "Bedirwicz" was first mentioned around 1370. The place name is probably derived from the Sorbian personal name "Bjedruch". The village was always connected to the Rodewitz manor and mostly belonged to the owners of the Crostau lordship . Originally Bederwitz was part of the Postwitz parish . Since the sermons in Postwitz were held in Sorbian, the pastor from Crostau looked after the German residents of Bederwitz from 1683. This dichotomy existed until 1930, since then all of Bederwitz has been assigned to the parish of Großpostwitz again. Before 1876, a bleaching and fulling machine was built for linen weaving, otherwise the place remained dominated by agriculture. Between 1889 and 1890, the Großpostwitz – Obercunewalde railway line was laid north of the village . In 1896 the grinding and board mill was converted into a stone saw and stone grinding shop, which later became a stone carving workshop for gravestones. In 1936 Bederwitz was incorporated into Rodewitz. On January 1, 1999 it was incorporated into Kirschau together with this . Bederwitz has been part of the city of Schirgiswalde-Kirschau since January 1st, 2011 .
In 1993 the area natural monument “Bederwitz wet and dry biotope” was established. Several half-timbered houses have been preserved in Bederwitz, including the old mill house. To the south of the village lies the Huttche, a wooded slope of the Spree.
Bederwitz is the seat of the “Obere Spree” sewage association, which operates its sewage treatment plant on the road to Halbendorf in the mountains .
Population and language
For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 129 in the 1880s; among them were 75 Sorbs (58%) and 54 Germans. Bederwitz was then on the extreme southern edge of the Sorbian majority area. Here the now extinct Rodewitz dialect of Upper Sorbian was spoken. The language change to German took place in the village mainly in the first half of the 20th century. In 1956, only ten to twenty percent of the population spoke Sorbian. Since then, the language has largely disappeared from everyday life.
