history

The devastation of the Thirty Years' War and the consequences of the Counter Reformation brought economic hardship to the landlords of the Bohemian exclave in Schirgiswalde. Most of the Protestant subjects had emigrated to Upper Lusatia , where they founded the new settlement Eichen in 1656 on the von Rechenberg manor in Oppach . Johann Georg Otto von Ottenfeld, who bought Niederhof in 1659, had the "Neudörfel" built on September 1st, 1660 west of Schirgiswalde near the exclave border to settle Bohemian weaver families. In the deed of founding, each house to be built was equipped with two and a half bushels of arable land, a two-year tax exemption and a subsequent payment in twelve annual installments. The service obligations towards the Niederhof included the delivery of two fathoms of logs , a spun piece of yarn and six days of farm duty every year . Due to the favorable conditions, the Neudörfel grew to 15 half-timbered houses within a short time and received its own local jurisdiction. From 1703 the Bautzen cathedral monastery owned both Schirgiswalder courtyards and made the Oberhof the new seat of power.

After the Austrian Empire had declared its renunciation of the Bohemian enclaves in the Kingdom of Saxony in the Peace of Schönbrunn in 1809 , the handover of the city of Schirgiswalde with the associated villages Neuschirgiswalde and Petersbach to Saxony was delayed for a long time. During this 36-year phase of an independent city-state, the pageantry flourished; political refugees and deserters found refuge in the enclave. The Neuschirgiswald tavern became a popular hideaway for the robber captain Wenzel Kummer ( Bohemian Wenzel ). These and other grievances led to the handover negotiations commencing on July 1, 1845, and the enclave being passed to Saxony on July 4, 1845. In 1851 Neuschirgiswalde broke away from Schirgiswalde and formed its own community. In 1865 the old tavern burned down, and in the same year a new tavern was built near the old location - the "Zur frisch Quelle" inn. On June 1, 1930 Neuschirgiswalde was incorporated again into Schirgiswalde.

During the GDR era, a bungalow village was built east of Neuschirgiswalde am Hohberg, today's Feriendorf Fuchsberg. The GPG "Berglandobst" created extensive aronia plantations in the Neuschirgiswalde corridor in the 1970s . After the GPG was dissolved, the Stolle-Obst company took over most of the plantations. Since January 1st, 2011 Neuschirgiswalde has belonged to the town of Schirgiswalde-Kirschau as a district .

Townscape

The Waldstreifendorf is in a protected location on loess loam soil in the basin of the Pilkebach.

In the village, which initially consisted entirely of half-timbered houses, 15 such listed houses, mostly equipped with outer houses, are still preserved today. About half of them are single-storey weaver houses.

Until 2004, the "Glöckelhaus", a half-timbered house with an upper arbor and a roof turret as a bell tower with the community bell from 1882, was the landmark of Neuschirgiswalde. The roof turret had to be removed in 2004 because it was dilapidated. To mark the 350th anniversary of Neuschirgiswalde, a free-standing bell tower was erected in 2010, from which the bell rings three times a day.

At the fork in the road to the west of the inn is the cross with the plague grave, at this point the victims of a plague outbreak are said to have been buried in 1632. Every year on Easter Monday, the plague grave is the destination of a procession from the Kreuzkapelle on Fuchsberg. Other cultivated customs are Maundy Thursday begging, the clattering around the bell tower on the Kartagen and the witch's fire .
