The Cuxhaven coastal heaths are in the districts of Altenwalde , Berensch - Arensch , Duhnen , Holte-Spangen , Oxstedt and Sahlenburg in the city of Cuxhaven in the district of Cuxhaven . They belong to the natural spatial region of Stader Geest and form the transition area from the Geest to the Wadden Sea.
Nature reserve
The coastal heaths, consisting of one larger and three smaller parts, were declared a nature reserve on May 31, 1983 by the former Lüneburg district government . The current protected area ordinance dates from December 6, 2004. The protected area has a size of approx. 892 hectares and bears the statistical code "NSG LÜ 267". When this ordinance came into force, older nature reserve ordinances from 1983 and 1984 (Sahlenburger Steertmoor, Spangener Heide) were repealed. The protected area is managed by the DBU Naturerbe .
Landscape image
A complex structure of the protected area can be found in the protected area, which is composed of a mosaic of different habitat types such as crowberry heather , dry sandy heather , wet heath, open sand areas and dunes, but also woody and forest areas.
In some areas there are small bodies of water, extensively used wet grassland , meadows and pastures.
In this extent and form, the occurrence of coastal heath is unique in Germany. In order to preserve the landscape, bison , Konik and Heck cattle are grazed .
Flora and fauna
More than 200 endangered animal and plant species find a livelihood in the nature reserve. I.a. are gentian , Middle sundew and Carex lasiocarpa and the birds wheatear , partridge , Whinchat , Stonechat , the sand lizard as a rare species of reptile, the moor frog as an endangered amphibian species and the rare dragonfly species large white-faced darter found.
