Cyprian Regner

Cyprian Regner (also: Cyprianus Regnerus van Oostringa, Cyprianus Regneri from Oosterga ; * 1614 in Friesland , † October 25, 1687 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch lawyer .

Life

Regner, who later took his surname van Oosterga or van Oostringa, was probably born in East Frisia. Later his father got a job as a tower guard in Zwolle , where he attended the city's Latin school. Therefore, he later boasted in front of other people that he was of high sex. He completed his first studies at the University of Groningen . On May 14, 1632 he enrolled as Cyprianus Regneri Zwollanus at the University of Leiden , where he completed his legal studies with Petrus Cunaeus (1586–1638).

In 1634 he acquired the academic degree of Doctor of Law with the treatise D. de rebus creditis . He then worked as a private lecturer in Leiden and appeared with some polemical legal treatises against the Leiden professors Jacobus Maestertius (1610–1658) and Claudius Salmasius (1588–1653). In those disputes he pointed out that Roman law was to be brought into agreement with divine law and pointed out the inconsistencies of Roman law.

After Bernardus Schotanus left Utrecht, he was appointed to the University of Utrecht on March 3, 1641 and took up the professorship of the institutes on March 19, 1641. After he had also become Professor of the Pandects in 1644 , he was promoted to the highest professorship on April 5, 1670. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1651, 1658, 1669 and 1677 . His diverse works concern Dutch law, feudal and canon law.
