Previous model DKW type P

The DKW 4 = 8 is a DKW brand passenger car with a four-cylinder , two-stroke , V-engine and two charge pumps , manufactured by the Zschopauer Motorenwerke JS Rasmussen motorcycle factory (part of the newly founded Auto Union from mid-1932 ) as the successor to the DKW P small car discontinued in 1929 15 hp was produced. The epithet "4 = 8" should make it clear that a four-cylinder two-stroke engine a eight-cylinder -Viertakter correspond (see. Also DKW 3 = 6 ), since a working stroke comes on each revolution of the crankshaft, while the four-stroke engine only in every second revolution of the crankshaft a work cycle (3rd measure). The running smoothness ( mass balance ) of the two-stroke engine is not better, however, only the uniformity of the power output. The engines were manufactured by the DKW parent plant in Zschopau ; the vehicles are assembled in the Berlin-Spandau plant .

history

The first DKW P 25 PS was shown at the 21st International Motor Show in Berlin in November 1928 , but only a few copies were made. It was only offered as a two-door sedan . The 25 hp (18 kW) engine with a displacement of 1 liter drove the rear wheels via a three-speed gearbox with a gearshift lever in the middle of the car. Like its predecessor, the P 25 PS had a self-supporting body made of plywood with a synthetic leather cover, but with a 2.8 m long wheelbase by 10 cm . DKW also took over the two rigid axles with transverse leaf springs.

After the hoped-for lower consumption compared to the predecessor due to the flushing with charge pumps did not occur, the plant in 1930 brought out the DKW V 800 4 = 8 with a wheelbase reduced to 2.7 meters. The engine with 20 HP (15 kW) power, reduced to 0.8 liters, did not consume less fuel, but only produced poorer performance. In addition, the thermosiphon -cooled engine, like all DKW engines, overheated easily and started badly even in the cold. The V 800 was available as a two-door convertible sedan or a two-door full cabriolet .

From 1931, the larger 1-liter engine with 25 hp was used again. The model with now hydraulically operated “oil pressure brake” was called DKW V 1000 4 = 8 and was available with two doors as a sedan, convertible sedan and full convertible until 1932.

The otherwise unchanged car came onto the market in March 1932 as the DKW special class Type 432 with a 6 cm longer wheelbase, longer body and four-speed transmission.

In October of the same year, the DKW 1001 special class replaced the 432 with a wheelbase that was increased by a further 9 cm to 2.85 meters and an additional horsepower engine . At the rear it had a " floating axle " with a high transverse leaf spring. The body was more elegant, but just as little durable as that of its predecessor. The wooden construction soon sagged between the axes and some older specimens are said to have even broken apart in the middle.

The DKW suspension class with a streamlined body followed in February 1934 with two “floating axes” . From January 1935, the engine produced 30 HP (22 kW) with a second carburetor. From July 1935 to the end of production in April 1937, a newly designed engine with a displacement of 1.05 liters and 32 hp (23.5 kW) was installed. The suspension class was available as a two-door sedan or convertible sedan.

With the engine of the last suspension class, a DKW special class appeared again in February 1937 with the chassis and all-steel body of the Wanderer W24 . This solved the problems with the warping, sagging and finally breaking in the middle of the wooden body. The special class was discontinued in 1940.

In total, almost 26,000 of all DKW 4 = 8 models were built in eleven years, including around 8,000 DKW special classes with an all-steel body.
