The Zürcher Oberland Steam Railway Association ( DVZO ) is a Swiss , standard-gauge museum railway and a licensed railway transport company . Its almost 12 km long main route is located in the Zurich Oberland .

society

On June 1, 1969, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) discontinued passenger traffic on the former section from Hinwil to Bauma of the Uerikon-Bauma Railway and replaced it on an experimental basis with a bus from the Zürcher Oberland (VZO) public transport company . The section between Hinwil and Bäretswil was then only served by freight trains.

Some railway enthusiasts immediately founded the Steam Railway Association with the aim of making rail journeys with historical locomotives and wagons.

Since May 6, 1978, the association has been running scheduled museum railroad trips between Hinwil and Bauma .

The association has been the owner of the almost 6 km long Bauma – Bäretswil section since summer 2000 and has been a licensed rail transport company ever since. The DVZO has the necessary permits for the use of rail infrastructure in free network access, which is why the trains are allowed to travel far beyond its main route.

Today the association has over 700 members, of which around 140 active members operate the railway, be it in the workshops in Uster and Bauma, in route maintenance, in the souvenir sales team, in the buffet car or with the train staff .

Trunk line

Be 4/4 between Bäretswil and Neuthal

The main line is the part of the former section of the Uerikon-Bauma-Bahn from Bauma to Hinwil, which was closed in 1968 , whereby the Bauma-Bäretswil line was taken over by the Swiss Federal Railways in 2000 for the symbolic price of one franc . The Bäretswil – Hinwil section still belongs to the SBB, which still offers freight services here. For this sub-area, the DVZO has to pay a train path fee (IBE infrastructure usage fee).

The whole route is single-lane and electrified and can also be driven by electric traction vehicles.

The journey begins in Bauma at 639.3 m above sea level. M. This station previously belonged to the Tösstalbahn and since the nationalization of the Swiss Federal Railways. Immediately after the exit, the train has to climb the greatest incline of 29.2 ‰ to the Neuthal stop at 696.2 m above sea level. M. cope. Shortly before the stop, the train crosses the 80 m longest bridge on the line, the Weissenbach Bridge. Below is the building ensemble of the Neuthal spinning mill , which was built by the founder of the Uerikon-Bauma-Bahn, Adolf Guyer-Zeller . The spinning mill was shut down in 1964 and is now a museum, which is also open on “Steam Sundays”.

After the stop, the train rises gently to the culmination point at 714.8 m above sea level, and then to Bäretswil station at 696.3 m above sea level. M. to arrive. This is where the steam trains that run on the days of travel cross. Through a deep forest you reach 648.5 m above sea level. M. the Ettenhausen-Emmetschloo stop , from which you have a wonderful view of the plain of the Zurich Oberland . Now, after a few minutes, the train arrives at its terminus, the SBB Hinwil station at 565.5 m above sea level. M., from where there is a direct S-Bahn connection to Zurich .

In addition to countless bridges and tunnels, you can also discover other railway rarities during the journey , for example the Bäretswil station is secured from Bauma by a Hipp'sche reversing disc and in Neuthal there is a hand barrier (train barrier ).

Driving operation

The regular trips with steam traction take place every first and third Sunday of the month from May to October. In autumn 2020, a pilot project with daily historical train journeys between Bauma and Hinwil will be carried out for the first time. The offer is supplemented by historical buses and the numerous industrial museums.

Extra trips

You can also book the trains for extra trips outside of the scheduled days.
