Damir Pekič (born January 15, 1979 in Maribor ) is a former Slovenian football player . The striker , who was also under contract outside of his home country in Germany, Portugal, Hungary and Austria, won the title of top scorer in the Slovenska Nogometna Liga in the 2000/01 season .

Career

Pekič comes from the youth of Kovinar MB . The attacker began his professional career at NK Maribor . As a young player he made his debut for the men's team of the first division, in which he was initially used irregularly. Accordingly, he had only a small share in winning the championships in 1998, 1999 and 2000. For the 2000/01 season, the club awarded him to league rivals NK Celje . Although he only finished fifth with the club, with 23 goals this season he sat ahead of Sebastijan Cimirotič and Ermin Rakovič at the top of the scorers list .

After his subsequent return to NK Maribor, Pekič established himself there in the attack line. With 14 goals this season he was again one of the most dangerous strikers in the league and was therefore a guarantee for winning the championship again. He placed third behind Romano Obilinović and his teammate Samir Duro on the scorers list. He also scored double digits in the following two seasons, but was far behind the top scorer Marko Kmetec and Dražen Žeželj respectively . Nevertheless, it was enough to win two more titles. In the 2002/03 season he won the championship again with the club, the following year he won the national cup alongside Aleš Čeh , Peter Franci and Bostjan Znuderl . In the 4-0 first leg win against NK Dravograd, he shone as a two-time goalscorer and contributed significantly to the title win in view of the 3-4 defeat in the second leg.

Pekič had aroused the interest of foreign clubs by his scoring danger. In summer 2004 he therefore left his home country and joined LR Ahlen in the 2nd Bundesliga . Neither under coach Ingo Peter nor under his successor František Straka , he came to the train and remained behind players like Stanko Svitlica , Daniel Thioune , Babacar N'Diaye or Musemestre Bamba a substitute. Therefore he turned his back on the West German club and joined the Portuguese club CS Marítimo . Here, too, his engagement was unsuccessful, so that he returned to his home country after a half series.

At his old club NK Maribor, Pekič showed his scoring risk again. By the end of the season he scored seven goals this season, where he succeeded in a hat trick interrupted by the half-time break in the 4-1 win over the eventual champions ND Gorica . This put the team in fourth place at the end of the season. After he had contributed eight goals to reaching third place in the table in the following season, he left his home country again in the summer of 2007. However, his foreign engagement at the Hungarian club Zalaegerszegi TE FC did not last long, after only a year and a half he moved back to Slovenia.

Pekič joined NK Nafta Lendava in spring 2009 . For the first division he ran up to the end of the season and contributed to the relegation of the East Slovenian club with a goal of the season. In the summer he moved within the league to NK Domžale , with whom he finished the league as eighth in the table. There he played until the summer of 2012, before he joined the Styrian national league club SV Wildon for a year and then moved to SV Frauental .

Since he has not been listed at any club since the winter break of the 2014/15 season, it can be assumed that he has ended his career.
