Dan Lucas (* 28. March 1954 in Falkensee as Lutz Salzwedel ) is a German rock singer and guitarist.

Life

1970s

Salzwedel grew up in the GDR , learned to play the guitar as an autodidact and performed with various school bands as a teenager. After graduating from high school, he first studied linguistics at the Pedagogical University of Potsdam and then entered the teaching post for English and Russian at a Potsdam secondary school. Despite social resistance, Salzwedel soon gave up teaching and took up a second degree in guitar and singing, which he completed with the state musician examination.

1980s

Salzwedel received the license to play and performed with the band Passion . Contact with Karussell came about in the early 1980s and in 1984 the group released the first album with Salzwedel as singer. During a tour of the band in West Germany in May 1985, Salzwedel and a fellow musician used the inattentiveness of a guard from the Ministry for State Security to flee and reported to a police station in Wermelskirchen as a republic refugee. After a short time he moved to West Berlin . His family initially stayed in the GDR, suffered from the reprisals of the regime there and was only able to leave in 1987. Because of "violation of the reporting obligation" he was ex situ offended under GDR law. In 1988 he was with the band Karo on a European tour support for Meat Loaf . After no further collaboration with the band's record company had come about, the band broke up in 1989 and in 1990 Salzwedel moved to Munich . His career picked up again; when he performed in North America, he took the stage name Dan Lucas .

1990s

Lucas was signed as a soloist with Marlboro Music, who released two of his albums. The single Heart of America was used in a McDonald’s advertisement. In July 1993 he won the International Istanbul Music Contest in Istanbul with the title Canadian Dream from the album Canada . For the follow-up album 2000! , which was recorded and produced in the studio The Clubhouse in Burbank (California), he was able to engage numerous guest musicians such as Robin Beck , Lisa Dalbello , Kane Roberts , John Pierce , Reb Beach , Michael Thompson, Michael Landau . He also wrote the song Close Your Eyes and Say Goodbye with Desmond Child . In the mid-1990s, Lucas then moved to Arcade Music, where he released the album News in 1996 .

2000s and 2010s

Since 2011, Lucas has also fronted the band Helter Skelter, who played classic rock from the late 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. In October 2000, he also started working as a teacher and social worker at the vocational training centers of the Bavarian economy (bfz) and most recently supported students at secondary schools in the Dachau district in choosing a career. In January 2019, Lucas became the winner of the first season of the talent show The Voice Senior . In spring 2019, Lucas took part in some concerts on the Rock Meets Classic tour, where musicians such as Ian Gillan from Deep Purple , Anna Maria Kaufmann and the front men of bands such as REO Speedwagon , Loverboy , The Sweet and Thin Lizzy performed with band and orchestra . In 2019 his single Don't Stop Believin ' , a cover version of the song of the same name by the American band Journey , was released on the record label Universal Germany .
