Danièle Lorise Watts (born November 3, 1985 in Riverside County , California ) is an American actress .

Life

Danièle Watts was born in California. Her father was in the military, so she moved frequently. She lived in Orlando , Florida during middle school and lived in Atlanta , Georgia during high school . She attended the North Springs Charter School of Arts and Sciences in Atlanta, the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and the British American Drama Academy in London. On television, she had guest appearances in the series How I Met Your Mother , Greek , Cold Case - no victim is ever forgotten , Detroit 1-8-7, Criminal Minds , Private Practice , 90210 , Castle , Melissa & Joey and Weeds - Small deals among neighbors . In her first television starring role she plays since 2014 in the FX - sitcom Partners Laura Jackson , daughter of Martin Lawrence's character.

She has also appeared in a number of other films and short films, including Django Unchained .

Alleged victim of racist incident

African American Watts has a relationship with white chef Brian James Lucas. On September 11, 2014, someone called the police emergency number when he saw the couple kissing in their own car. He mistook the multiracial couple for a prostitute and a suitor. Watts was handcuffed for refusing to identify herself to the police. This incident occurred in Studio City in Los Angeles, California. No charges were brought and Watts was released shortly thereafter. The couple hired a lawyer. Internal investigations have been initiated with the police. The head of the LAPD, Charlie Beck, announced that his police officers had behaved according to the guidelines that apply to suspected prostitution.
