Daniel Edward Pilarczyk

Daniel Edward Pilarczyk (born August 12, 1934 in Dayton , Ohio , † March 22, 2020 in Cincinnati , Ohio) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Cincinnati from 1982 to 2009 .

Life

After attending school, he first attended the Saint Gregory seminary in Cincinnati, which he graduated in 1953. He then studied philosophy between 1953 and 1961 at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome , where he first obtained a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1955 and then a licentiate . After obtaining a bachelor's degree in theology in 1958, he was ordained a priest on December 20, 1959 by the Patriarch of Cilicia , Krikor Bedros XV. Cardinal Agagianian .

He then continued his studies at the Pontifical Urban University and obtained a degree in theology in 1960, before he was awarded a doctorate theologiae in 1961 . He then completed a postgraduate degree in Classical Studies at the Xavier University of Cincinnati in 1965 with a Master of Arts (MA Classics) and finally graduated in 1969 with a Philosophy Doctor (Ph.D. Classics) at the University of Cincinnati . From 1968 to 1974 he was Vice President of the Athenaeum of Ohio and Rector of Saint Gregory Seminary .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on November 12, 1974 auxiliary bishop in Cincinnati and titular bishop of Hodelm . The Archbishop of Cincinnati, Joseph Bernardin , ordained him episcopal on December 20 of that year . Co -consecrators were Archbishop Nicholas Thomas Elko , Auxiliary Bishop of Cincinnati, and the Bishop of Youngstown , James William Malone . As auxiliary bishop he was also vicar general , as well as trustee ( Trustee ) of the Athenaeum of Ohio, the third-oldest Roman Catholic seminary in the United States .

Pope John Paul II named him Archbishop of Cincinnati on October 30, 1982 to succeed Joseph Bernardin , who became Archbishop of Chicago . The inauguration took place on December 20 of the same year. On June 15, 1993 he consecrated Carl Kevin Moeddel as auxiliary bishop in Cincinnati, who held this office until his resignation on June 20, 2007 due to illness. As Archbishop he was also Chancellor of the Athenaeum of Ohio until he retired on December 21, 2009 . He was also trustee of the Catholic University of America, first from 1983 to 1991 and later again between 1997 and 2000 .

As the successor to John Lawrence May , Archbishop of Saint Louis , he was also Chairman of the Bishops' Conference of the United States from 1989 to 1992 and then handed this office over to the Archbishop of Baltimore William Henry Keeler .

Archbishop Pilarczyk, who was also a member of the American Philological Association , also published numerous theological books . He has been awarded several honorary doctorates.
