Daniel Lopar (born April 19, 1985 in Kreuzlingen ) is a Swiss football goalkeeper . He was under contract with FC St. Gallen between 2006 and 2019 . Since then he has played for the Western Sydney Wanderers .

Career

After his time with his youth club FC Romanshorn, Daniel Lopar moved to the squad of FC Wil , which was playing in the top Swiss league at the time. There he received a lot of playing time in the 2003/04 season at the age of 18, as he was able to replace the injured goalkeeper Nicolas Beney . While he was relegated to the Challenge League with Wil that same year , he was able to celebrate the greatest success of his career so far in the same period, when he and his team defeated Grasshopper Club Zurich 3-2 in the final of the Swiss Cup .

After relegation, he played with Wil in qualifying for the UEFA Cup before he left the club in spring 2006 for FC Thun . Back in the Super League, however , he had to settle for the role of reservist at the Bernese Oberland and only played four league games during his six-month commitment.

In the 2006/07 season Lopar moved to FC St. Gallen . In St. Gallen, too, Lopar was initially only second choice behind the experienced regular goalkeeper Stefano Razzetti . This only changed in January 2008 when the new coach Krassimir Balakow changed the goalkeeper hierarchy for the second half of the season and appointed Lopar to nominal number 1 at FC St. Gallen. Despite convincing performances as a goalkeeper, he was relegated to the Challenge League with St. Gallen at the end of the 2007/08 season . After the championship title in 2008/09, he returned directly to the Super League with St. Gallen.

Daniel Lopar then continued to play for FC St. Gallen, where he was temporarily ousted in goal by Germano Vailati , but has been the goalkeeper again since the 2011/12 season. After relegation in 2011, he was immediately promoted again in the following season. Lopar then reached the 3rd place in the Super League with the promoted team, which qualified for qualification for the UEFA Europa League . After defeating Spartak Moscow in the play-offs, the FCSG qualified for the group stage. In the championship, Daniel Lopar lost his regular place for the last 5 games of the 2013/14 season to Marcel Herzog .

In the following season, coach Jeff Saibene put on a goalkeeper rotation. Daniel Lopar played two games and then had to sit on the bench for two games each time. Thanks to good preparation results before the 2015/16 season, Saibene Lopar decided to express his confidence in the position of regular goalkeeper. In January 2018, Daniel Lopar finally lost his regular place. The then coach Giorgio Contini stated that it was not because of Lopar's performance. The decisive factor was the hoped-for development in favored Dejan Stojanovic . In March 2019 it was announced that Lopar would leave FC St. Gallen and join the Western Sydney Wanderers .

National team

In the summer of 2005, Lopar took part with the Swiss U-20 selection at the Junior World Cup in the Netherlands. Started as a regular goalkeeper in the tournament, he injured himself after the first game against South Korea (2-1) and could not be used in the further course. After defeats against Brazil and Nigeria, the team was eliminated in the preliminary round.
