Daniela Di Toro (born October 16, 1974 in Melbourne ) is a former Australian wheelchair tennis player .

Career

Daniela Di Toro was seriously injured by a fallen wall at a swimming event at the age of 14 and suffered paraplegia . Shortly thereafter, she began wheelchair tennis and started in the paraplegic class.

She took part in a total of five Paralympic Games . At the 1996 Games in Atlanta , she was eliminated in both singles and doubles in the semi-finals. In the bronze games, she lost to Chantal Vandierendonck in singles , and in doubles she and her partner Randa Hinson lost to Oristelle Marx and Arlette Racineux . Playing in Sydney in 2000 , she and partner Branka Pupovac won the silver medal in doubles. In the final, she lost to Maaike Smit and Esther Vergeer . In the singles she failed in the quarterfinals to Sharon Walraven . In 2004 in Athens and 2008 in Beijing she only competed in singles. In 2004 she won the bronze medal after losing to Sonja Peters in the semifinals and then beating Florence Gravellier . In 2008 she was eliminated in the opening round against Esther Vergeer. In London she competed in singles and again in doubles in 2012 . In singles she reached the last sixteen, in doubles she did not get past the first round.

At the Wheelchair Tennis Masters she was in the singles final three times and lost all three final games. In 1995 it was defeated by Monique Kalkman, and the following year by Chantal Vandierendonck. In 2010 she was left behind against Esther Vergeer. In doubles, she won the title in 2000 alongside Maaike Smit. They defeated Esther Vergeer and Sonja Peters in straight sets. In Grand Slam tournaments , she celebrated winning the singles title at the US Open in 1997 and 1999 . In 2010 she also won the doubles competition at the French Open with Aniek van Koot .

In the world rankings Daniela Di Toro had temporarily taken the lead in both singles and doubles. She succeeded for the first time in singles on July 14, 1998 and in doubles on May 20, 1997. After the Australian Open in 2013 , she finally ended her career after having briefly ended her career between 2005 and 2007. She has received numerous awards over the course of her career. In 1999 she was named Australia's Disabled Athlete of the Year. The following year she received the Australian Sports Medal .
