Dannel P. "Dan" Malloy (born July 21, 1955 in Stamford , Connecticut ) is an American politician and was governor of the state of Connecticut from 2011 to 2019 .

Life

After school Malloy studied at the Law School of the Boston College Law . After completing his studies, he worked as a lawyer. Malloy is a member of the Democratic Party .

Malloy was Mayor of Stamford from 1995 to 2009. On November 2, 2010 he won the gubernatorial election with a little more than 6000 votes ahead of the Republican Thomas C. Foley , whereupon he was able to replace incumbent M. Jodi Rell on January 5, 2011 . On November 4, 2014, he was re-elected for a second term . In the face of poor poll numbers, he announced that he would be waiving a possible third term in 2018. Unlike many US states, the Connecticut Constitution does not have any term limits. Malloy's mandate ended in January 2019. Ned Lamont , also a Democrat, was elected as his successor . Lamont had already run for office in 2010, but failed in the Democratic primary against Malloy.

In 1982 he married Cathy Malloy and they have three children.
