Dannevirke is a town in the Tararua District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand . The city is the seat of the Tararua District Council .
Origin of name
Dannevirke translates as " Dänenwerk " and was the name of a wall that was built across the Danish peninsula in the 9th century to protect against attacks by the Saxons .
geography
The city is located about 45 km northeast of Palmerston North in the plain of the Manawatu River . The mountain chains of the Ruahine Range rise around 10 km to the west .
history
Dannevirke was founded in 1872 by Danish and Norwegian immigrants. They arrived in New Zealand on two ships, the Hovding and the Ballarat, via the port of Napier , first working in road construction, then settling in the Dannevirke area and clearing the land and starting farming. When the railway line reached Dannevirke in 1857 , numerous sawmills were set up for the manufacture of railway sleepers and other material for railway construction. The upswing attracted more settlers and in 1892 Dannevirke was granted city rights.
population
In the 2013 census, the city had 5043 inhabitants, 10.1% less than in the 2006 census.
Infrastructure
The New Zealand State Highway 2 runs through Dannevirke and connects Dannevirke with Hastings and Napier in the northeast when coming from the south of Masterton . Likewise, the railway connection of the Palmerston North – Gisborne Line runs directly through Dannevirke and thus connects the city with the economic area around Wellington in the south, via Palmerston North with Auckland and to the northeast with the east coast of the North Island.
