The Court of the World is a French drama directed by Pierre Salvadori from 2014.

action

One day, musician Antoine fails to go on stage and abruptly breaks off the concert. He cannot sleep, is depressed and listless. He spends most days on park benches; He loses a casual job as a pizza driver after a short time because his manner has a demotivating effect on his colleagues. He is offered the job of a caretaker in an old apartment building in the job placement service. He got the job because the main administrator Mathilde is more on the phone than paying attention to his references. Over time, Antoine settles into a slow routine. He drinks a lot and also takes mood enhancers, which, however, intensify the depression after periods of improvement. Occasionally he takes time off due to illness.

In the course of the weeks Antoine got to know the residents of the house: Serge is the main manager and is often on the road. His wife Mathilde has just retired, neurotic and over-motivated to do voluntary work. The architect Laurent Maillard is over-strict and makes sure that everyone always obeys the house rules. Therefore, he is often at war with the former professional footballer Stéphane, who is now a drug dealer and consumer and deals in stolen bicycles. Other residents of the house include the blind Vigo, to whom Mathilde regularly reads the bad news from the daily newspapers, and the security guard Lev. He's not one of the real residents, but stays overnight regularly and covered by Antoine in the building's workshop. He is a follower of a sect for which he likes to distribute leaflets; His dog, however, causes even greater problems, which he finally leaves with Antoine when he is given a place in a dormitory himself.

The fragile coexistence in the house is shaken when Mathilde becomes increasingly obsessed with a crack in one of her apartment walls. She has a feeling that the crack is getting bigger. Serge lets Antoine paper over the crack, but Mathilde cannot rest. On Antoine's advice, she has the crack examined by a specialist. He finds out that the house was built on a clay bag that reacts to moisture. Although the situation is harmless, Mathilde wants to have the bag filled, but the house co-owners refuse to pay for the costs. Mathilde's condition becomes increasingly serious and she finally believes that her husband Serge wants to admit her. She flees to Antoine, with whom she is allowed to live for a few days. However, he cannot help her, as he is deeply mentally desperate, can hardly sleep and has meanwhile also found his way into drug use through Stéphane. He opens up Mathilde, who has not spoken for days, to bring her back to Serge the following day. When he refuses to keep his dog in his small apartment to Lev shortly afterwards and insults Lev's sect guru, Lev gets violent. Antoine then shows emotions for the first time - he begins to cry. He receives drugs from Stéphane that night and finally collapses in the bathroom from an overdose. Mathilde alerts the ambulance - Antoine dies in the ambulance. This night changes Mathilde, who finds her way back to life despite her obsessions and fears.
